First-year CS student looking to pivot to ATIS Tech via NCM-STEP for Fall 2026 – Quick questions on timeline, and trade reality.
Hey everyone,
I’m an 18M currently based in the GTA. I just completed my first year of a Bachelor of Computer Science. I originally applied for an Officer track (ROTP) (last week), but as expected for June, my detachment confirmed that university spots are fully allocated for this year.
Since my primary goal is a subsidized tech stream where my education is funded while earning a salary, I am strongly considering dropping down to NCM-STEP for the Aerospace Telecommunications and Information Systems Technician (ATIS Tech) trade for this upcoming fall. I know Cyber Operator went Direct Entry only, so ATIS seems like the closest fit for my background.
Before I commit to changing my file with my recruiter, I’d love some real insight from people in the trade or recruiters on the sub:
- NCM-STEP Availability: Since it’s already June, is there realistically a chance that NCM-STEP intake quotas for ATIS Tech are still open for this September? Do hard-tech trades like this have more rolling flexibility compared to the strict ROTP caps?
- College Applications: If my recruiter gives me the green light, how does the college matching process look this late in the summer? Do people usually scramble for late admissions to local Ontario colleges (like Sheridan, Conestoga, Mohawk) for a 2-year Computer Systems diploma? Or would I have to go for something else?
- Feeder to Cyber: I've read on older threads that ATIS is a primary feeder trade for in-service selection into Cyber Operator later down the road. Is that still true with the recent trade overhauls?
Appreciate any advice, timelines, or honest reality checks you guys can provide. Thanks!
