Installing the antennas not according to the advertised picture — will this cause any issues?

I received a photo showing the 4 antennas of an outdoor access point installed in a different orientation compared to the official product image.

My question is:

Would this cause any performance or signal issues?

Or is it generally fine as long as:

the 2.4GHz and 5GHz antennas are connected to the correct ports, and all antennas are simply positioned upright?

What's the biggest thing your current KVM dock still gets wrong?

I've been browsing KVM-related threads for a while, and one thing that stands out is that even the most recommended KVM docks seem to have at least one annoying flaw.

Some of the complaints I see over and over:

Having to install drivers

Unreliable switching between computers

Limited charging capabilities

Monitor compatibility issues

Random USB disconnects

.....

It feels like every KVM dock gets some things right and some things wrong.

For those of you who use a KVM dock regularly, what's the single most frustrating thing about your current setup?

Internal Drama: Engineers want a Triple-Monitor KVM Dock, Sales Team wants Dual. Who is right?

We are currently designing our KVM Dock. But right now, our Engineering and Sales teams are locked in a massive fight, and we need you to break the tie.

Here is the argument:

Team Engineers (Go Big): They want a Triple-Monitor Dock (2 screens via DisplayLink + 1 via native USB-C).

The Catch: It’s powerful, but users need check if their laptop port actually supports video output when use the specific HDMI port. Non-tech users might get confused and think the dock is defective if the 3rd screen doesn't light up.

Team Sales (Keep It Simple): They want a Dual-Monitor Dock (Pure DisplayLink). They believe simplicity is key—getting the dock to just work with zero user learning curve is the top priority.

The Catch: It’s 100% foolproof. Plug-and-play on almost any laptop with zero tech confusion. But, it "only" supports up to 2 screens.

Sales says users hate reading specs; Engineers say users always want more screens.

We want to hear from you (Casual users, Multi-monitor owners, IT Pros, Tech Elites):

Would you prefer a foolproof 2-screen dock that just works, or a high-power 3-screen dock even if it means double-checking your laptop specs first? Or do you have another dream setup in mind?

What is your absolute biggest KVM dock dealbreaker? (Sleep/wake issues? Cable clutter? Switch lag?)

Where does the water come in ? Do I not protect good enough ?

We're dealing with a case where an AC1200 outdoor AP failed due to water damage after about a year of outdoor use. It’s rated IP65, and based on the photo, the install looks correct—the customer even ran the Ethernet cable through a protective tube to the PoE injector.

How did this happen? I’m stumped on where the water managed to leak in. What am I missing here? If you have this AP, how would you install or extra-protect it to prevent this?

Will this setup improve my outdoor AP performance?

One of my customers sent me these pictures and asked whether this setup could improve the WiFi signal strength and coverage of an outdoor AP.

It looks like the AP has been placed inside a custom enclosure. From the photos, the material seems to be either plastic or metal (not 100% sure). The customer also mentioned something about a “30dBm” modification, though I’m not entirely clear what that refers to.

After seeing this, I advised against this kind of setup, as I’m concerned it may prevent the outdoor AP from working as intended. However, I didn’t go into a detailed technical explanation.

Are there any scenarios where this kind of modification could actually help, or is it generally a bad idea?

I’m not trying to criticize the customer’s idea—just sharing a case and hoping to learn from more technically experienced people here.

10Gbps link speed, but only 6.7Gbps transfers. Is that normal?

Ran into an interesting case recently.

A customer reported that a USB-C port on his dock was only reaching about 6.7Gbps when using an external SSD, even though the port is rated for 10Gbps.

We tested:

  • Another SSD
  • Another USB-C cable
  • Different USB-C ports on both the dock and computer
  • Dock reset

No change.

Then I asked him to check:

Apple Menu → About This Mac → System Report → USB

The device was negotiating at 10Gbps.

My understanding is that 10Gbps is the link speed, while real-world file transfers are usually lower because of protocol overhead. Around 790–860 MB/s (~6.3–6.9Gbps) doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

After seeing the screenshot, he stopped mentioning the speed issue and simply said the dock was working great for power delivery and freeing up ports.

Would you consider this case resolved, or is there something I may have overlooked?

PS: English isn't my first language, so please excuse any awkward wording. The case is real and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

What made you finally pull the trigger on a Thunderbolt 5 dock?

I'm helping a good friend pick a dock for his new 13" MacBook Air M5 (16GB/512GB). He's not particularly technical, so he asked me to figure it out and his company will reimburse the purchase. His requirements are pretty simple:

  • Charge the MacBook through the dock
  • Connect a few USB-A and USB-C peripherals
  • No need for Ethernet
  • Ideally support two external monitors
  • Reliable and easy to use

What do you usually prioritize when buying a Thunderbolt dock?

Brand reputation?
Port selection/layout?
Design?
Price?
Reviews?
Warranty/support?
Something else?

I've spent most of the morning comparing docks and now everything is starting to blur together. 😅

I'm also wondering whether a Thunderbolt 5 dock is even necessary for this use case, or if a Thunderbolt 4 dock would already be more than enough.

I'd love to hear what setups you're running, especially if you're using a MacBook Air. Any dock recommendations or buying advice would be appreciated.

Made My Outdoor AP Less Noticeable

I bought an outdoor AP, but it only came in white or camo colors. I didn’t want it to be too noticeable, so I painted it to better blend in with the rocks around it.

However, after doing that, it feels like the Wi-Fi signal and stability aren’t as good as before.

Is this just a coincidence, or could the paint actually be affecting the AP’s performance?

Any thoughts—agree or disagree—are welcome.

The drive constantly disconnects from my Mac. This happens on both battery and mains power. Is the drive defective?

One of my customers is experiencing the issue described in the title, but I’m not sure how to fix it. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance!
