Google Takeout messed up all my photo dates. Made a free Mac app to fix it, sharing here if it helps.

hey guys,

so i finally pulled the trigger and downloaded all my photos from google photos using takeout. big mistake lol or at least thats what it felt like.

every photo came with todays date. my whole library 8 years of photos — showed up as "June 2026" when i dragged it into apple photos. vacations, birthdays, random 2am food pics, everything just dumped into one single day.

turns out google strips the original dates and gps from your photos and puts them in separate .json files next to each image. like thousands of tiny json files that are basically useless on their own.

i googled around for a fix and everything was either paid ($30+), some sketchy site wanting me to upload my photos, or a bunch of terminal commands that honestly scared me a little.

so i just built something myself. its a simple mac app:

- drag your takeout zip files straight in (don't even need to unzip)

- it reads those json sidecars and puts the dates and gps back into your actual photos

- fixes the file dates so your timeline sorts properly on import

- finds duplicates and matches split live photos too

- you pick how you want the output — date folders, flat for apple photos, or yyyy-mm for immich

runs completely offline btw. nothing leaves your mac. no accounts no cloud no tracking. that was important to me since these are personal family photos.

its free and the code is on github: https://github.com/aishuo07/photo-migration-doctor

download the mac app here: https://github.com/aishuo07/photo-migration-doctor/releases/tag/v0.1.0

whats next / stuff im planning:

  • windows version (this ones mac only rn, sorry windows folks)
  • side by side duplicate preview so you can pick which copy to keep
  • icloud export support (same date-stripping problem honestly)
  • direct import into immich/photoprism via their api
  • maybe a cli version for people who prefer terminal
  • synology nas optimized export

honestly the roadmap depends on what you guys actually need. if theres stuff you want that i havent thought of just tell me.

its v0.1 so still early. id love it if some of you could try it on your takeout folders and tell me if something breaks. especially interested in:

  • does it handle your specific folder structure ok?
  • any weird file types it cant process?
  • what import format do you actually need?

happy to fix whatever comes up. just don't want anyone else to go through the same pain i did lol

cheers ✌️

I built a small macOS app to make external monitor brightness less painful

hey everyone,

i recently got annoyed that my Mac brightness keys worked nicely for the built-in display, but my external monitor was basically on its own island.

there are apps that solve this, but i wanted to build something simple, open, and very “just works” from a normal user point of view. so i made GlowKey.

the idea is:

don’t make users care about DDC/CI, gamma, VCP codes, DisplayLink, HDMI adapters, etc.

just move brightness up/down and make the screen visibly change.

what it does right now:

- menu bar app

- slider for each display

- remembers brightness per monitor

- restores brightness after reconnect

- uses real monitor brightness when possible

- falls back to smooth software dimming when hardware brightness is blocked

- fn + F1 / fn + F2 controls the external display under your mouse cursor

- keeps normal Mac brightness behavior for the built-in display

- has a CLI too if you like scripting things

install:

brew tap aishuo07/glowkey

brew trust aishuo07/glowkey

brew install --cask glowkey

open /Applications/GlowKey.app

github:

https://github.com/aishuo07/GlowKey

small warning: this is still an early public alpha. it’s not signed/notarized yet, so there may be macOS trust friction. i’m working toward making that cleaner.

if you try it, i’d genuinely love feedback:

- your Mac model

- macOS version

- monitor model

- USB-C / DisplayPort / HDMI / dock / DisplayLink

- what worked

- what felt bad

- what broke

especially curious how it behaves on Dell, LG, BenQ, Samsung, and random office monitors.
