🎁 Cantina La Martina to replace Poe's Sandwich Joint at Human Robot, and the Monto has a new chef

Cantina La Martina will officially start serving food at Human Robot's Kensington and Brewerytown locations on Sept. 13. Brewerytown will be a burrito bar, and Kensington will have a full menu of wings, tacos, burritos, and nachos — plus a weekday food happy hour.

As always, AMA about my reporting and I'll answer the best I can.

🎁 Stephen Starr settles with the National Labor Relations Board over union busting allegations at D.C. steakhouse

I know someone posted story about the NLRB investigation in this sub months ago and people were pretty interested, so here's the update without a paywall.

TL;DR: the settlement is similar to what Starr could've received had the case played out in court, and it's not legally an admittance of fault even though it looks that way. Starr Restaurants still hasn't recognized the union. AMA and I'll try to answer.

🎁 Is Roxanne reopening? After being shuttered by the city, the Queen Village restaurant is taking reservations again.

The cease operations order is still active, L&I told me, but the Dept. of Health did confirm that Roxanne initiated the process for getting a food license by submitting a plan of review. They're in the process of setting up a health inspection.

HOWEVER

Roxanne's first location at 912 Christian Street also never had a food license or health inspection, the city officially confirmed. "Our records indicate that she did start the process to apply for a Food Preparation and Serving License in 2022, but the application was ultimately abandoned,” an L&I spokesperson told me.

All of this is in the article (which doesn't have a paywall), and I am posting, again, because this sub has been very interested in Roxanne. As always, AMA and I will do my best to respond.

🎁: New York Bagels’ owner vows to reopen after two explosions, but questions remain

The oven caused both explosions, the fire department said, and L&I has since deemed New York Bagels unsafe to occupy. If repairs are not made within 30 days, L&I warned that it could move to vacate or demolish the property.

Again, always happy to answer any questions y'all may have since I know the initial news of the second explosion left a lot of people (myself included!) very heartbroken.

One of the biggest questions I received after the Roxanne story was, “What is the Michelin Guide going to do now?”

So I answered it — and they’re doing nothing. Happy to answer a couple of Qs while I WFH this morning about the story!

Editing to add: Since people want to be loud and wrong about my track record in the comments, I have also written about debatable business practices from men including Stephen Starr, the two owners of Glu Hospitality (repeatedly, I might add), and the owner of the Philadelphia Wine School. So to those who say I hate women, I hate men too, apparently more given my history! I have also written articles that touch on how difficult it is to open a restaurant in Philly. xoxo
