Best Place to Get Drunk

Sorry if this is not allowed, but I was curious about what everyone feels is the best place in the city to get drunk. Not necessarily like “shit your pants and black out while having a fight in the street” drunk, but like, “certainly well above the legal limit while out with friends having a good time” drunk. So, the kind of place that is comfortable and enjoyable enough to visit that it isn’t difficult to hang out and have 3+ drinks.

I feel like Kelliann’s gets a lot of love here, and I’ve very happily consumed a few beverages at Ortlieb’s, but I’m interested in other perspectives on the subject.

Gift for wine-loving relatives

I’m getting married end of September and my aunt is making my dress as my gift. It is a HUGE labor of love and I’d like to get her something to say thank you.

She and my uncle “had their courting days in Philly” as she likes to tell me, and they are huge oenophiles. They’ll be here for the week before my wedding and I’m wondering if there’s a wine-related place where I could treat them. Either a shop I could get a gift card to (I’m guessing this would be in NJ only) with a great selection or a place they could get both a great meal and good wine.

I’d like to do somewhere that would be easy to get into- our plans that week are a little up in the air so somewhere you can easily make a reservation for within 1-3 days would be good.

What is an item a restaurant recently removed from the menu that you miss?

For me it is the chopped burger from Emmy Squared. I loved how it slightly different than typical burgers - the meat was chopped up with green peppers and onions. Anyone else know the item I am talking about? It was great. Recently went to order it and it wasn't available anymore (at least not at the Philly location).

What are some of your most missed items taken off menu in recent years?

South Philly solo night rec: Tesiny or Side eye?

Have a night free to myself this week and looking to try either Tesiny or Side eye. Which would you recommend for a low key bar service with solid drinks and great food? Also please recommend your order at either spot. Thanks!

Uber eats scam @ Chiquitas?

Has anyone else ordered from here and received a call from the "restaurant" demanding you give them the codes texted & emailed to you under the guise of confirming your order?

When i ordered from here this week thats exactly what happened. They knew my information, order & everything so it was pretty sketchy. I obviously didnt give it to them & called the restaurant directly. They said that its been happening and to ignore them.

My concern is if it wasnt actually the restaurant how did they know my email, number & exactly what I ordered?

Catering recom

Hi!
I’m hosting about 10–12 people at my place and need recommendations for really good, somewhat fancy food that I can order for an early dinner party.
I might need to pretend I made some of it so my guests won’t get offended LOL

TIA

$40 a day

One of my favorite shows as a kid was $40 with Rachel Ray. Understanding that it was probably easier in the 2000s vs today (so that I’ll raise it to $50). But if you had it, what would be your breakfast, lunch, dinner (dessert or snack could also be included!)?

🎁 Cantina La Martina to replace Poe's Sandwich Joint at Human Robot, and the Monto has a new chef

Cantina La Martina will officially start serving food at Human Robot's Kensington and Brewerytown locations on Sept. 13. Brewerytown will be a burrito bar, and Kensington will have a full menu of wings, tacos, burritos, and nachos — plus a weekday food happy hour.

As always, AMA about my reporting and I'll answer the best I can.

Italian for a Birthday

We finally secured a babysitter for this weekend so that I can take my husband out for his birthday. His favorite is Italian so I’m looking for a good option that feels celebratory.

A couple parameters:
We are both meat eaters but my husband does not eat seafood of any kind.

Because we’re late to the game, we’d need somewhere we could find a reservation this Saturday or Sunday although we’d be flexible on the timing.

We’re open to location but it’d be nice to have a walk around the neighborhood before or afterwards.

Thank you!!

Best Buffalo Chicken Pizza?

Just had Carbon Copy’s Buffalo Chicken pie and it was absolutely perfect. Great balance between the spice and the sauce. Can’t recommend it enough.

Any other great buffalo chicken pies out there??

Prunella - Let’s do Lunch

Forced family style feels a little weird - wonder how are the salad and pizza portions for two vs one person? I’d imagine it’d just be one pizza to share? Lol

Matt & Maries (devoured hoagie too fast for picture)

I think this is the essence of what we do here in Philly. I think it was Ramsay or some other celeb chef who touts something like, "don't go crazy on the number of ingredients, just get quality for what you use"

Got them again because they had a coupon on GrubHub.

Clearly a Liscios seeded roll, so great bread. Check.

Claudio's sharp prov that they crumble up so it properly distributes across the roll.

fennel salami, genoa salami, and cap

Good house pickled peppers, choice of roasted reds, but I got double cheese because that was an option and I know how good claudios sharp prov is.

They make some kind of pepperoncini aoili that I could drink with a straw.

Hell, the sandwiches actually look exactly like they do in their pictures.

I actually called in to confirm it was Liscios and talked to the manager for a second who was appropriately named Gnocci (or something like that). Dude was super nice and clearly REALLY passionate about the sandwiches they make which shows in the finished product itself.

Fuck Jersey or NYC, they ain't got shit on our hoagies.

Also, if you like a place write them a review. It really does help a shit ton especially in this AI era reviews mean even more than they used to. Hell, if you REALLY love the place then review them on multiple platforms, that helps even more!

Where in the area can I get home fries like this?

Sorry the picture sucks but I honestly don’t even know what they’re called other than home fries or hashbrowns. I thought that was diner style but google says that’s the stringy kind.

Every time I ask people always say the same places that don’t actually serve these kind anymore. They all serve the stringy kind now which I don’t enjoy as much.

Broad street diner doesn’t have them
Penrose diner doesn’t have them
Oregon diner doesn’t have them

All of them definitely used to but I guess the stringy ones are easier?

That said I’m willing to travel outside the city if need be. South Philly or center city would be ideal though.

Edit: Bills breakfast does have them but they’re honestly just ok.

Sulimay's my beloved

As a certified diner luvr, I am coming to share my deep, abiding, consistent love for Sulimay's. It's everything you want in a old school diner. Kitschy, nostalgic, cash only, damn good food. The hashbrowns are to die for. And I'm from the South, so I know my way around a hashbrown.

Solid biscuits and gravy, too. Delicious pancakes. I come here once a week or so, and I've never had a bad meal. Kind people, hot coffee, that diner ambience that almost makes you feel anonymous (in a good way). What more could you want?

Trust me, friends, if you haven't been, it's well worth the trip out to Fishtown.

I've heard their burger night on Wednesdays is exceptional too, but I haven't been yet 👀

Noodle Soups

Hello! I am trying to make a list of noodle soup spots to introduce my friends to. I am trying to introduce them to new cuisines and for the upcoming fall/winter and I think noodle soups are a good way to start with! I want to take them “around there world” so I am looking for the best places from different countries - ex: Japan - Ramen, maybe Terakawa? I am especially blanking on spots for Thai/Indonesian/Cambodian noodle soups. Would appreciate your recs! I live near Cafe Nhan and that’s my fave BBH spot but if you have any other suggestions, please let me know. Think easy lunch/dinner spots to walk into. Nothing super fancy, would prefer casual. Thanks in advance :)

Love For Tommy's on Girard

Is everyone completely sick of pizza posts yet?! (Don't answer that...)

So, I've lived in the neighborhood for 2 years and just now got around to trying Tommy's. I didn't expect to be blown away, but I was pretty pleased with being able to get a totally decent slice for three bucks in a world of Shackamaxons and Marina'ses and Ligurias.

It might seem like an inconsequential thing, but I also liked that they didn't try to send me away with a branded box for ONE SLICE like some of the newer places do. I got a slice on a paper plate with one napkin and they sent me on my merry way. Reminded me of simpler times.
