Exhaust repair advice
I have a 2017 Jetta GLI that, after driving through a flooded road (I had no alternative), there is a loud roar coming from the center exhaust pipe. I can't see any cracks or other damage, but the heat shield obstructs seeing the top of that pipe. It's very loud, and my area's towns all have ordinances to seize vehicles that exceed x dBm (mostly to bust people running open header or straight piped). The OEM replacement is an integrated part (center exhaust pipe + catalytic converter + down pipe), and costs $1412.
I only have 66k miles on it and already upgraded the brakes, with plans to install an aftermarket intake and exhaust (and possibly the larger turbo down pipe). The performance exhaust systems are $1500-2200.
I know there are aftermarket center exhaust pipes... cut the old one out and attach new with clamps. I am still getting excellent boost and engine performance, no OBDII codes, but I've read those non-OEM pipes can be a headache.
Would anyone who had the exact or similar problem (ie the cat or muffler was damaged), please advise what option you chose? Again, I still want to put a full performance exhaust system on it, but don't have funds for that yet. I don't want to shoot myself in the foot.
