Length of Rehab

I have a friend who's in rehab. One month impatient, and now going on 5 weeks IOP. She's saying that she will be in IOP another 3 weeks. I'm thinking WTF? Is this normal? She has insurance and she says her counselor says that insurance is making her stay this long. Everything I know about health insurance is they want to LIMIT expenditures. I'm wondering if her counselor is giving the insurance company bad info to keep her there to milk it for as long as they can.

Smash or no?

I know this topic has been discussed on this sub before, but I want to get a reading of the current sentiment. I think previously (in my estimation), it's about 60% "don't smash while cooking" and 40% for "smash." I fall into the smash crowd, so I know I will get the derisive comments. But, that's ok. That's the way my momma cooked em and I still do to this day. On which side do you fall?

General Questions

A woman I've been dating has recently gone to an inpatient rehab for alcohol abuse. I have a couple of questions, because this is all unfamiliar to me.

  1. she cannot have ANY contact with people on the outside. This seems unusual to me that she can't even call anyone, since this was 100% voluntary; not court-mandated. Before she was admitted, she told me that she would be able to call me. Also, she said that she could have visitors. Neither is the case.

  2. I just found out from her mother that she's staying an additional 28 days. Is this common? She had already been sober for about 6 weeks before she entered rehab.
