Is coding theory still a good research direction for a PhD nowadays?

Hi everyone,

I'm currently exploring research directions for a PhD and would appreciate some advice from people working in coding theory, mathematics, information theory, cryptography or related fields.

My master's project is in coding theory, where I've been studying error-correcting codes, particularly algebraic/group-ring constructions and their connections with quantum error-correcting codes.

I've recently become quite interested in areas such as algebraic coding theory, quantum error-correcting codes, rank-metric codes, algebraic geometry codes, and code-based cryptography.

My main question is- Is coding theory still a good field to enter as a PhD student in 2026?

I'd especially like to know:

- What areas of coding theory currently have promising research directions?

- What career possibilities are there in both academia and industry for someone specializing in coding theory?

- How do you see the field developing over the next 5–10 years?

- Would you recommend specializing in a particular application, such as quantum computing, post-quantum cryptography, or information theory?

I'm still exploring and haven't decided on a specific subfield yet, so I'd really appreciate perspectives from current PhD students, postdocs, or researchers.

23M – IITian confused about the future

Hi everyone,

This is the chart of my cousin. He is an IITian and has recently completed his Master's this June and has been feeling quite confused about his future. We have also consulted a few local astrologers, but the answers were either vague or not very satisfactory, so I thought I'd ask here.

We are quite close, and I've seen him struggle with these questions for some time now.

Here are some of his main concerns:

  1. He has received a few job opportunities, but he doesn't really want to enter the job market right now. Instead, he is considering pursuing a PhD and a career in research. However, he feels very uncertain because a PhD is a long journey, and he often wonders whether he will be able to complete it successfully. He is quite intelligent, but at the moment he seems to be lacking confidence in himself. Does his chart indicate a good future in research and higher studies?

  2. How does his financial future look? Around what age or phase of life is he likely to achieve financial stability?

  3. He has always been very spiritual by nature and often talks about not wanting to get married. Because of this inclination, he feels more drawn toward academia and becoming a professor rather than pursuing a corporate career. Does his chart indicate spiritual or religious growth in the future?

  4. If he does pursue research, would it be more favourable for him to do a PhD in India or abroad?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Please be as honest and straightforward as possible about whatever you see in the chart.

Thank you.
