Did you know that in 1983 Viggo was hit by a car? And of course he talks about it in an interesting way

I got hit in the head once while I was living in New York,” he says, making a tidy segue while on the topic of injuries. “It was 1983, and I was trying to make it as an actor and working at a restaurant in the garment district. It was Sunday afternoon and very quiet. I had the Times in my hand and I was crossing the street when a car ran through a red light and hit me in the hip. I shot into the air and the newspaper went flying, then I got hit in the head and then I had no feeling. It was very dreamy and I thought I was paralyzed. I was lying on the street, bleeding out of the back of my head, when a wino bent down in front of my face. He smelled like strawberry wine and his hair was greasy, and he put his hand under the back of my head and said, ‘Feels kind of mushy.’ Then he looked around and said, ‘I gotta go. Korea.’ And like an apparition, he was gone.”

“You must have thought, ‘This is it.’”

“I did,” he says. “Something like that makes you pay attention to your surroundings. As an artist you observe the world. Sometimes it takes an accident to make you appreciate why you’re here, and you ask yourself, ‘What can I do to contribute to the world."

It's Father's Day so here is a little video of Viggo and 5-year-old Henry goofing around in 1993

If you are wondering where the clip is from:

This is a 2-hour long gem I've recently discovered, a behind the scenes video for the movie "The Crew". The movie seems to be rubbish but in this behind the scenes video there's lots of footage of Viggo (even shirtless several times, haha). Henry also appears in the video several times.

I hate being seen asleep. It's so embarrassing. Anyone else have this problem?

I cannot sleep in public places.

I cannot sleep on public transport, even if it's a long journey and all the other passangers are asleep. I force myself to stay awake. I just hate the thought that I am asleep, completely defenseless and out of control and I don't know how I look like, if I snore (and I know I do snore simetimes), if I drool, if my mouth looks funny, etc... I just hate the thought that people are staring at me while I am out.

That applies to hospitals, too, I've spent days in a hospital sleeping close to nothing because I shared the room with other people.

When I was a teenager, multi-day school trips or summer camps were a nightmare because of this. Sometimes I set an alarm for very early so that I would wake up before the others so they won't see me asleep.

The only person I don't really mind is my boyfriend, I can fall asleep next to him, but even so, I worry about my appearance and snoring and usually I make sure that I fall asleep last and wake up first.

I've never had surgery under general anesthesia but soon I'll need one and I am terrified. Not because of the usual stuff; I am not afraid of not waking up, or having nausea. I am afraid that I will be lying there unconscious and I am also scared of the waking up part, that I might be too groggy and confused and it will be totally embarrassing.

Does anyone else have this problem?

A little moment I love in the ROTK movie. Aragorn's sigh after the accepts the crown from Gandalf and before he turns to address the crowd. The sigh says it all "OK, there's no going back, I really have to accept I've become king now. Let's do this."

Viggo on becoming famous after LOTR: "I was open to having more work opportunities, but I wasn't prepared for being photographed (by paparazzi). But I think they got tired of me quickly because I wasn't on a beach with Liv Tyler or something, I was with my dog or taking a nap on the sidewalk." Haha

When filming of The Lord of the Rings wrapped 25 years ago, the horses used for the films were auctioned off. Liv Tyler's stunt double, Jane Abbott couldn't afford to buy the horse she worked with (and fell in love with), so Viggo Mortensen bought it for her. "He just did it because he understood."

Andy Serkis directed an animated movie from George Orwell's famous novel and it's just very bad, and nothing like the source material at all.

It makes me worried about The Hunt for Gollum which he is directing. Maybe he should stick to acting?
