Intermittent depth readout

Intermittent depth readout

I have B&G instrumentation on my 40' sailboat, and I've been struggling with my depth readout. When I turn on my instruments, it can take a long time for a depth readout to appear, and is just dashes in the meantime. It has always shown up eventually, perhaps 10 or 15 minutes max wait time. It will occasionally disappear when in use, but that is uncommon.

Anyone have any ideas on a cause or solution?

Clay in well water clogging filters

I have a single family well with 4 of us using water. Our water has high clay content, and it is clogging our filters within a little over a week of use. Our current setup has (all 20") a 5 micron sediment filter, a CTO Carbon filter, Iron and manganese filter, UV, then the tank. On the way from the pump house to our house, it goes through one more 1 micron sediment filter.

The water is great, without staining or other issues in the house, but the clay clogs up the first sediment filter within a little over a week. I can remove the filter and spray the clay off of it and get a little more time on it, but this is getting ridiculous. There is staining around the other filters as well, so there is some clay getting past the first filter.

Are there any fixes for this? In doing research, I've found that I might need a Spin Down filter? It appears there are auto flushing spin down filters- is it safe to assume I can put this as the first filter out of the well, and set it to auto flush every day, or few days, or whatever, and it should keep most of the clay out of the other filters?

Any better options out there?
