Why is my pup barking at commands (but following through)?

She understands and reliably follows through on many commands (sit, down, stay, wait, leave it, drop it, heel, middle, etc) so it’s not an issue of not knowing/confusion. She’s 10 months old.

The barking occurs occasionally when she is asked to do multiple commands in a row; she is much quicker to do the command when she isn’t barking.

I am thinking she is a bit frustrated about performing multiple commands/not getting rewarded soon enough. Is there a way I can work through this with her? She’s my first dog so lots of learning curves. She does seem easily frustrated during impulse control activities at times as well. Open to any advice/personal experience, thanks!

Best tools for extremely strong reactive dog?

My dog is 10 months old, mixed breed, 90 lbs, and a pure block of muscle. She is quite good on her leash in majority of environments, but she has extreme dog reactivity and will take off full speed to lunge and bark at the end of the leash.

I tried to avoid tools such as prongs, slips, etcetera and have only used a flat collar, harness, and gentle leader (she is extremely powerful, we stopped using it so she didn’t harm her jaw/face) in the past. At this point, I am open to whatever will make our walks safe for us and those around us.

The other day during a walk, there was a dog barking in a window right beside us and I had turned to attempt walking the opposite direction, but she immediately took off and I was not prepared and she pulled me right over. She is the same weight as me so she essentially dragged me across the sidewalk on my ass until I got my footing again.

I recognize this is extremely dangerous and that is why I am looking for advice.

She was not expected to grow this large so it is becoming extremely stressful for me to walk her.

Tips/advice for a cottage trip?

Hey! We will be going to a cottage next month with this 9 month old girl. I am wondering if anyone has some tips/advice to make sure it all goes as smoothly as possible?

Also, if anybody uses a GPS collar we are wondering if the Pathfinder 2 is decent or if we should look for something different.

This girl was born knowing how to fetch!

We never had to teach her, she somehow just always did it. Luckily, at 80lbs now, she no longer flings herself onto our laps..

Does anybody else’s pup love watching TV?

It’s so adorable! She has loved watching the TV with us since she was a baby.

9 month old puppy bit/nipped a dog for the first time today

Hey everyone. My pup Luna has significantly struggled with leash reactivity since she was ~4 months old. We did puppy classes, individual training, spent hundreds of hours looking into puppy training, socialization, and desensitization.

She has always been friendly with dogs she has been introduced to properly (parallel walks, etc) although very energetic.

Today on a walk, a lady appeared from around the corner with her much smaller dog and it ran right up to my dog, and instead of sniffing or being polite it immediately jumped up landing with four feet on her back. My dog did NOT like this and barked like crazy and lunged a bit. We kept her moving away as instructed by our trainer, but their dog was on a retractable leash so he approached her once more as we were leaving and jumped towards her, and she nipped/bit his chest/neck area. There were no actual wounds but I am so heartbroken this even happened. I understand she was probably very stressed, but it was just super upsetting to witness. I’ve never seen her act in a physically aggressive manner before today.

Barking at people who talk to me on walks?

Hey, my 8 month old dog has become a lot better in some ways; she no longer barks at people doing their own thing, however, if that same person chooses to talk to me then she will bark. For reference, she has not been aggressive at all it seems to be fear-based or frustration-based.

Yesterday on our walk a lady walking past us turned to say she was “so pretty”, then my pup started growling and quietly barking at her…. The minute the lady was finished her sentence she went back to doing her own thing immediately and did not give her a second glance.

We passed the lady once more, and spoke to her first and my pup looked up but went back to doing her own thing with no reaction. We are going to work on initiating a conversation with every person we pass on walks since she seems okay with that, but I am a bit confused by this behaviour. Does anyone else’s dog do this?

Luna’s heel work!

she is just the smartest little pup she picks up on things so quickly! just have to work through her stopping to eat every treat😂😂

(++ she’s going on a hypoallergenic prescribed diet next week, if anyone’s been through this and has ideas on how to keep up with positive/reward-based training let me know)

how do you deal with off-leash dogs?

hey! this is my 7 month old pup, and with the warmer weather coming we have been struggling with off-leash dogs in our neighbourhood during walks and potty breaks. we seeded our backyard so she has to go out front with me on a long-line for potty breaks.

yesterday, our neighbours 2 dogs came barrelling down the road full-speed right at her. i did my best to grab her leash and hold her behind me (she’s still young and struggles with commands under high pressure situations, many of these types of interactions has lead to leash frustration for her but she is not aggressive at all), while saying no and shooing off the other dogs. the larger dog was circling behind me to get to her and snarling/nipping in her direction. the owner was literally just standing by watching this go down for a good minute before he finally screamed at the dogs and one got spooked and ran off. this has happened multiple times with this neighbour, and also many other neighbours.

im just not too sure what to do in these situations. how do you actually manage to keep off leash dogs away? especially when they’re large and clearly not very friendly.

Begged for a puppy my entire childhood. Moved out and got her myself :)

She is just perfect! A 7 month old goofball.

I feel so ashamed whenever she reacts in public.

I just feel like I put an insane amount of time and effort into learning about socialization and training and somehow my 7 month pup still ended up reactive. We had to go to the vet today, and somebody sat a few seats away from us with their dog, and she began lunging, barking, and whining after a few minutes of not being able to get to the dog. I walked away and reoriented her focus onto me, but then we went into the exam room and she was super wary of the veterinarian and began barking at him as well.

We have done a few individual sessions with a trainer and will continue to, but it’s just so disheartening/shameful when she keeps reacting in situations where every other dog is so calm and collected.

She’s 6 months old and this happens like 3-4x weekly. It happens walking around in our backyard or when we walk down the steps. It never happens indoors or on walks.

I typically just get her collar and the minute it’s on she just totally stops this behaviour. I stood around today to get a recording to try and figure out what’s going on. She’s my first dog and I just am at a loss here. She’s such a good puppy other than this specific behaviour.

EDIT: She has done puppy training classes and has an individual trainer we have met with a few times so far. She gets multiple (2-3) walks for 1-2 hours daily including long-lead, sniff walks, training during walks. She gets ~1 hour of one-on-one play with us including fetch, tug, etc. She plays independently ~1 hour a day with a bungee toy, whatever toys are laying around, etc. She gets mental enrichment from multiple kongs, lick mats, and toy-dispensing balls daily. I am open to alternative/more exercise but she’s still a growing pup and I am not 100% sure what’s the safest for her little joints?
