New to Me Custom Shop style 18

Happened across this beauty and at first was a bit scared by the Full Thickness neck… and it’s a baseball bat but wow this is an amazing beast of an 18. Blows my HD28 style Adi out of the water in projection and sounds amazing. I get the custom shop hype now 😅. I guess I’ll have to be buried with two guitars because this isn’t going anywhere! Not new, not old, just right! Back to playing!

Would you say this is likely structural or routine (end-block aside) Martin D18

Hey everyone, I know the answer to the first part is “it depends” but was curious how structural you would say this is from the photos alone. They said it hasn’t been repaired and it goes along the side of the guitar a bit too perhaps 4 inches below the waist on both sides but maybe it was not that long. It had an end pin modification for an amp it seems but I’m not sure how it got that bad of a crack . They said it sounds good, no obvious neck twists or buzzing, bridge is not lifting etc. (Although I did note a line along the top of the bridge but it’s GC could be lighting). Im pretty sure it’s a larger gap near pin but hopefully less bad as it goes out

Obviously it needs to be repaired but is this relatively routine for a good luthiere or is the crack toooo long. I haven’t seen the endblock but I’ll take a look at it when it arrives. It was a calculated risk as it was cheap enough after shipping to be worth it … I hope (2019 D18)

Appreciate any thoughts on complexity and what you might charge if this came across your bench.

NGD Yamaha FG-TA - Amazing!

Didn’t think I’d like a Yamaha this much (having mainly played Martins). I was able to find this locally for a very fair price. While I was skeptical of how much I’d use the effects it actually has been a really fun and pleasant experience. I strum, and fingerpick both and honestly can’t find anything negative to say about it. It has great volume, good articulation of notes and is just so fun to play. The effects don’t feel gimmicky and honestly it’s just fun to keep out on the stand. It isn’t the beauty of a high end guitar but it is just fun to play.

If you have been on the fence about getting one look used but I highly recommend it. I know people say Yamaha is good bang for the buck but honestly until I gave this a try I would have said they were “ok”. This has definitely convinced me they are worth at least trying. You never know it may come home with you!

Complexity and cost of repair

Hey,
So I was in the mood for something different and came across this Martin 00-15 guitar. Worked out a deal on it considering the damage looked bad on the outside. But looking on the inside it seems less catastrophic. If you were to have this come across your bench what would you charge? It is along the lower right side of the guitar. It apparently was pierced not crushed.

I wonder if it’s “novice friendly” I might also take a stab at it.

NGD 1999 Blueridge BR-6S

I have accepted I have a problem 😂 found this locally and despite having enough guitars this still Came home with me. Neck seems to be in good shape but I am maybe going to have to remake the saddle. They had a zip tie shim and it sounds worse with it as it was smaller than the saddle gap. Without it it sounds much better but has some buzz so tweaking is required maybe it can get away with relief but we’ll see. I haven’t seen too many blue ridges BR-6S around so wanted to share. Appears to be a 1999 made. I just can’t stop staring at the backwood. It fingerpicks amazingly but strumming is a bit more constrained and higher with 12s but that could be string choice.

Anyone else have this model? Would love to hear what you liked or found made it sound even better.

NGD Guild A-20 and a question

Hey everyone, was at good old Guitar Center yesterday for Father’s Day. After a month of chaos I decided I was going to get myself a stand guitar, something budget friendly to leave out during the work day. My goal was something that could hang with my Martin rosewoods but not have to be babied. I saw another store had a used FG-830 so I tried our stores and it was good but I kept looking just to see what was there. I saw this Guild A-20 on the top shelf so asked a rep to see it. Despite its dead strings it was surprisingly punchy and articulate. Strummed it hard and it was honestly better than most of what I was trying in its price range and sounded a bit better than their D10E and special (no electric D10). They marked it as “Used Excellent” but pre tax it was $330 (not much under new but it had seemed new to me)

The question- is it fine, should I replace or return?
Despite doing what I thought was a super meticulous check of action height, saddle height, bridge lift check I somehow missed what looked like a replaced saddle that had space and leans (can see how it leans forward with space behind. I’m debating getting a new saddle fitted by my local Luthiere but being near at the top of what I wanted to spend I’m wondering if it can/should be put off. It has held tune fairly well (i of course put new strings on right away so it did need a tuning) but sound is honestly amazing. Option B is I return it for an FG830 but honestly this is hard to put down but the work would add $100 ish to what was already higher end of what I wanted to spend.

NGD-2016 000-28EC

Well every time I say I’m done I find something else. I had wanted a 000-28 but ended up finding another guitar so the search was paused . And I loved what I had found it’s a beautiful guitar. But I ended up looking online again and finding this beauty. It needs a binding glue on one side but was able to make a deal happen. Came in earlier today and I really have enjoyed the sound and the neck is also super comfortable. I’ve been wanting to learn more fingerpicking songs and the neck just feels great!

It came from the west coast dessert to east coast so now I let it acclimate and play some more! Hard to put it down. Just hope in weather change no issues pop up. Office is being humidified at a nice 47% humidity and will go up to 50 later tonight.

Martin Binding Cost Question 000-28

TLDR: With binding what’s been your larger repair costs? At what point do you decide it’s not worth it? It’s going to be a player not a family heirloom

Hey everyone, I wanted to get a pulse and see if anyone has had this work done recently. I came across this Guitar and from all accounts everything looks good neck wide and condition besides binding. however it is a 2015 000-28 which puts it right in the binding failing time period. I have found it pulling away on the front on both waist (smaller gaps thankfully) and the back waist. Has this part pulled clean off. I’m not looking for museum piece. I’m looking for a good player and the price is being fairly adjusted I just kind of wanted an idea of what I could be getting into. I know a Martin tech and I’m gonna have him quote it if I move forward with this. but for those of you that I’ve done both sides and likely more repair what has kind of been your out-of-pocket Max or what should be reasonable? I’ve gotten a couple quotes on previous guitars and they have been three to $400 but I don’t know if since this is the more of the Guitar what I could be looking at I don’t need perfect I just don’t want falling apart

I think I said “last guitar” two guitars ago… been playing around with trying to find a good finger picker for the couch. Love my 18 and 28 but they are just a bit big.

Happened to be talking to someone a while ago and they had mentioned how much they loved their 90s M-36 and someday they might want to sell it. I took a look and played it and fell in love with it. I told him if he ever sells it let me know first. I just got the call yesterday. 🥲 one bad decision later I am in love with this thing. It’s both loud and articulate. It really feels like a smaller 28 it’s that good.

The only negative is what appears to be a single super tiny hairline crack that seems stable but runs from the bridge down to the base of the guitar. Neck sees to be doing great and saddle seems nice and high. The amp covers the serial number so I don’t know the exact age. But wow I’m in love. Ok no more guitars!
