The Message Behind the Sign: Credit vs. Cash
This vintage ad perfectly illustrates two contrasting approaches to commerce:
On the left, the merchant who sells on credit (à crédit) suffers from empty pockets and a stagnant shop. Relying on deferred payments leaves him broke ("Credit is the key to poverty"), while customers end up buying low-quality, generic products (produits anonymes).
On the right, the merchant who sells for cash (au comptant) thrives. His business runs smoothly, his cash flow is healthy, and his customers enjoy top-quality, well-known brands (produits de marque like Spigol). Both the trader and the customer win.
Unfortunately, today's reality has flipped: widespread reliance on informal credit and debt has destabilized small businesses, creating market confusion and diluting product quality. A timeless reminder from the past!
