Ace's Counter Chaos Dwarf Renegade Rules

I've updated my counter proposal to the draft Chaos Dwarf Renegades rules.

This is entirely not endorsed by the Renegades rules team and just me brainstorming on what I'd want the Chaos Dwarf rules to be for gameplay and lore reasons. I have still attempted to keep the power level of any changes in balance with Old World.

Change Log Changes from Renegade Army List DRAFT V1.5.2.2

Grand Army Composition List

  • Despot → Overlord, Seneschal → Overseer. The Overseer remains the Battle Standard Bearer option.
  • Conditional Core is now driven by the General's Title rather than by which specific models are taken. Of Gorgoth unlocks 0-1 Black Orc Mob; Of the Legion unlocks 0-1 Infernal Ironsworn; Of the Conclave unlocks 0-1 Bull Centaur Renders. Sorcerer-Prophets and Chaos Dwarf lords lead every different aspect of the war machine, so the unlock should follow the commander, not the unit.
  • Daemonsmith Engineers added to the Characters list (new entry).

Special Rules

  • Titles of the Dawi-Zharr — new. Any Chaos Dwarf character may take one Title free of charge from those listed on their entry: Of the Conclave, Of Gorgoth, or Of the Legion. One per character, and characters need not match. The General's Title changes which units may be taken as Core.
  • Daemon-fueled Artillery — new. After Step 2 (Scatter) of a Bombardment, roll a D6 and reduce the scatter distance by that many inches, to a minimum of 0. Chaos Dwarf artillery is fed by captured daemons and souls, not clumsy blackpowder. D6 may prove too generous and could be dropped to D3, matching the Doom Diver.

Magic Items

  • Black Hammer of Hashut — AP improved to -2; the bonus against Flammable models is now Multiple Wounds (D6) rather than Killing Blow.
  • Dagger of Malice — 35 → 20 points, AP improved to -2.
  • Dark Maul 50 → 45 points. Graven Sceptre 30 → 25. Hellshard 20 → 15. Ashen Banner 30 → 20. Daemon Flask 50 → 40.
  • Mask of the Furnace — now also grants a general 6+ Ward save alongside the 3+ Ward against Flaming Attacks.
  • Overseer's Sigil — range extended from 9" to 12".
  • Shroud of the Ancestor — now grants Veteran in addition to Hatred (Dwarfs).
  • Daemonic Familiar — now applies to enemies engaged with the owner's unit, not the owner alone.
  • Breath of Hashut — no longer Single Use.
  • The Cinder Ring, 30 points — new. The wielder may cast Storm of Ash as a Bound spell with a Power Level of 2.

Lore of Hashut

  • Curse of Hashut — the target applies a -1 modifier to its Toughness for the test, and the hits are not subject to "Look Out, Sir!"
  • Storm of Ash — enemy units within 9" of the caster now also gain the Flammable special rule, giving the lore a set-up-and-punish interaction with the Black Hammer and with Flaming Attacks generally.

Weapons of Zharr-Naggrund

  • Darkforged weapon — base profile is now S+1 as standard. The Spell-wrought result reverts to Magic Resistance (-1) for non-wizards, since the Strength bonus is now built into the weapon itself.
  • Fireglaive — the ranged profile gains Quick Shot.

Characters

  • Titles added to the Sorcerers of Hashut and Chaos Dwarf Lords entries (all three), the Castellan (Of the Legion only), and the Bull Centaur Taur'ruk (Of the Conclave only).
  • Overlord and Overseer may now be mounted on a Lammasu.
  • Castellan — Toughness 5 → 4, Leadership 9 → 10. Points unchanged.
  • Bull Centaur Taur'ruk — Attacks 4 → 5. Points unchanged.
  • Daemonsmith Engineer, 40 points — new entry. M3 WS4 BS4 S4 T4 W2 I2 A2 Ld8, hand weapon and light armour. Not a Wizard by default; may become a Level 1 Wizard for +30 points, knowing a single spell from the Lore of Hashut. Magic items up to 30 points. Carries Infernal Engineer, giving a gun line access to artillery re-rolls without paying for a caster it does not need.

Units

  • Minimum unit sizes reduced by one model across the board — 5+ to 4+ for Chaos Dwarf Warriors, Blunderbuss Decimators, Infernal Guard and Infernal Ironsworn; 3+ to 2+ for K'daai Fireborn and Bull Centaur Renders.
  • Infernal Guard — BS 3 → 4; gains Ensorcelled Weapons. The Fireglaive option is decoupled from Blackshard Armour and costs +2 points per model on its own, with Blackshard Armour restored as a separate +1 per model upgrade for one unit per 1,000 points.
  • Infernal Ironsworn — BS 3 → 4. Champion renamed from Overseer to Deathmask, as Overseer is now a character title.
  • K'daai Fireborn — gain Move through Cover, Ward (5+) and Swiftstride. Points unchanged at 38.
  • Bull Centaur Renders — WS 4 → 5. Points unchanged at 54.

Monsters and Mounts

  • Lammasu — reworked. +95 → +130 points. WS 4 → 5. Loses Furious Charge. Base size widened to 50 x 75 mm or 60 x 100 mm. Claws and fangs given a full profile (S, AP -1, Magical Attacks).
    • Sorcerous Miasma rewritten — any enemy engaged with the Lammasu now gains no benefit from magic weapons at all, counting as armed with an ordinary hand weapon and losing that weapon's special rules including Magical Attacks. Previously it protected only the rider.
    • The Withering — new. A character mounted on a Lammasu may cast Plague of Rust (Lore of Elementalism) as a Bound spell with a Power Level of 2.

Artillery

  • Crew Ballistic Skill raised from 3 to 4 on the Deathshrieker Rocket Launcher and the Dreadquake Mortar.
  • Both gain Daemon-fueled Artillery. Points unchanged.
  • Dreadquake Mortar — Multiple Wounds returns to (D6) from (D3+1).

Old World Alternating Activation Conversion [Unofficial]

Hey All,
Its been well over a year since I first posted about my idea to convert The Old World's alternating turn ruleset into an alternating activation system.

I rewrote the turn structure into an alternating activation system (think Oathsworn, Firefight, ASOIAF, or Legion) while changing as little else as possible. Every unit rule, weapon profile, spell effect, and combat modifier is untouched, only who acts when changes.

How it works:

Each turn still has the same four phases (Strategy, Movement, Shooting, Combat), but within each phase, players alternate activating one unit at a time instead of one side going all at once. A unit resolves everything it needs to do in a sub-phase before the next unit activates.

A few load-bearing mechanics make this work:

  • Priority roll: each turn, both players roll a D6 (ties re-roll, with a rotating +1 to whoever went second/deployed first). Winner picks First or Second Player. Going second means reacting to your opponent all turn, but getting the last activation in every phase.
  • Pass tokens: the player with fewer units on the table gets pass tokens equal to the difference, letting them decline an activation without ending the sub-phase. This stops horde armies from just outlasting elite ones through sheer activation count.
  • Charges are split from reactions: players alternate declaring charges one at a time before anyone reacts, so you see the full picture develop before committing to Hold/Stand & Shoot/Flee/Counter Charge.
  • Combat stays simultaneous: players alternate picking which combat to resolve, but both sides fight in full once a combat is chosen, exactly like the current rules.

There's an errata/FAQ section covering the edge cases this creates, Conveyance spells and double-movement, characters joining/leaving units, reserves, Magical Vortexes only triggering once per turn instead of twice, etc.

The doc marks every mechanical deviation in orange so you can see at a glance what's actually new versus restated official rules, most of the text is the existing rulebook, just reorganized.

Genuinely looking for people to try this at the table and tell me where it breaks down, especially: whether Second Player's "last activation" advantage is too strong in shooting-heavy lists, whether the pass token math is intuitive in practice, and whether four alternating sub-phases in Movement is more bookkeeping than it's worth. Full doc attached below, happy to hear all constructive criticism.
