Sci-Fi Sundays
Guys I really like Alien movies. The Arrival, Alien franchise (horror twist is something else on Sci-Fi), so I was wondering if this movie is a good watch for Sci-Fi Sundays

Which film character speaks to you on a spiritual level. Can be their personal life circumstances, backstory/origins, their ambitions/goals, any characteristic or personal quirk
For me it's Maxine from the X trilogy
What even happened here? Why is Onic shutting down? What does it mean for existing customers and also especially the naive who paid for the annual plan a couple months back
I don't know about you guys but I feel insulted that MCU slop machine thinks that bringing old actors in new roles after killing them using lame plot devices like the multiverse where you can conveniently skip any linear and coherent storytelling with an impenetrable excuse, just to extract profits from audience with limited options is pure mockery of said audience. I won't be engaging with this. But I will be watching it once it is on digital. But I won't participate in this insulting ritual of flocking to cinemas to put money in the pockets of people who mock their audience and the medium that is very important to me. Feel free to do this shit in TV series, but movies? You are taking real estate away from decent and even good indie movies like Obsession because you have the resources to invade the mind share of consumers.
A really funny and cool movie. It was hilarious and the deliberate relationship cringe they lean into was so funny and hits you like a truck after the obvious reveal happens. Also I like how it is subverting the genre by showing the opposite perspective of sci fi >!robot!< movies. I think this scenario of especially guys doing the exact type of shit to their >!robot !<girlfriends is a plausible future. I still think >!robot!< uprising or at least takeover is inevitable because that's just a better and more resilient medium for life but this is definitely a refreshing take on an intermediary stage which isn't talked about enough. How humans will exploit their >!robots!<.
Sophie Thatcher is my favorite up and comer (Heretic was a top movie and discovered her in yellowjackets which I abandoned halfway through) and Quaid plays a douchebag villain so perfectly it is crazy. He can play this type of guy so well.
I don't usually watch horror movies but it's not like I am terrified of them. Standard cookie cutter stuff is mostly supernatural and jump scare heavy which one gets over from. For instance the last horror horror movie I watched was I think the latest Conjuring. It gave me a false sense if security about the genre. Then I also have some experience with atmospheric horror. But as I said, I don't like to be needlessly scared and get that adrenaline and cortisol spikes when I don't need to get them. The genre isn't my thing but I don't skip a good movie because of it (not calling conjuring good at all, or any film in the franchise, or even bad).
But ever since I started getting into these film communities and social media, very recently, this movie kept showing up. Looked into it, and this one I particularly avoided getting any spoilers which is another thing I usually don't bother with. It really excited me. This one I wanted to give proper time and attention which is rare because I am usually multitasking when watching a movie unless it is not a standard cookie cutter approach in a genre or not explicitly either a thriller or a thinker.
So last night I watched it and you guys, this might be one of the scariest movies I have seen. As an avid movie watcher, I have to mention that atmospheric horror, claustrophobia, and lingering tension and dread isn't something I am that unfamilar with. But this movie takes the whole vibe to a whole different level. It's a nail biter, sphincter clencher, adrenaline spiker, pee inducer, and everything about the movie is designed to torture you while mocking those smug horror movie watchers who think they have seen everything.
It creates that suffocating vibe around you which might leave you permanently traumatised and even the ending which people are saying is a standard horror trope, I mean I don't know how else you wrap this sort of plot without that, but I think it was still pretty cool and a personal note it reminded me of reading something about the period I was already interested in and wanted to know more about. But the end is really like a stretched rubber snapping back into place and all pieces coming together in a really scary way.
That being said if you guys want a pure horror joy ride without the cartoonish lameness of typical horror movies, this is the one to watch. But it gets too much still.
A way to give this movie a fair shot is to give the movie what it is asking you to. People are rightly underwhelmed by the ending but the first 45 minutes demand you to see it from the angle it is feeding you for the perfect buildup.
If you guys are in the mood for a comfort movie I would recommend Mother! (2017). Don't get deterred by the initial loudness and chaos. Watch the whole thing. Highly recommended to watch while eating.
Looking for: Shopping Guide for Audio Gear in Pakistan, Shopping Guide for Audio Gear in General, and Technical know how of Audio
I found this community at a prefect moment when I was starting my audiophile journey. Audiophile is an exaggeration but I recently got into audio and my primary use case is movies.
Audio is an underrated aspect for movies and my main thing is immersion and high res. Immersion for Blade Runner type, high res for instrumentals (a couple random ones I have tested on Spotify) and vocals need to be clear and not muddy which my gear does well enough. I either don't have the right perspective on bass or it just doesn't happen to be a large enough aspect of my personal media consumption.
I don't know much about the technical aspect which is what I want to learn from you guys but I got Philips SHP9500 and Moondrop Space Travel 2 Ultra recently and that has changed my perspective on audio. What I'm wondering is how to appreciate this more, what music to get into (ironically some songs especially hip hop sound terrible on Moondrop even worse than local Ronic Eclipse earbuds).
My next purchase will be IEMs and I'm kind of regretting the Moondrop although I needed something for wireless but I should have gone with Anker Soundpeats type rather than audio enthusiast for this form factor and gotten IEMs for critical stuff. These are great audio wise, but the case, battery timing, and just general lack of QoL make it terrible for what I got them for.
P.S. If I had to recount my whole audio journey, it started with Ronin Eclipse I got last year when I just needed something for listening to YouTube podcasts. I don't listen to music much but Im getting into instrumentals. Learned how total crap they were so started researching something that would beat it on sound quality and got carried away while researching Moondrops. Needed something for desktop as well, headphone form factor. Local gaming tech shop posted about these HP Pavilion 600 headset and I didn't know much about audio but I was getting into surround sound by then and got too carried away with 7.1 virtual surround sound branding gimmick and wasted 4k on a skull crushing uncomfortable pair of headphones which in hindsight was a lesson that taught me the basic things to keep in mind when shopping for headphones. Also the 7.1 thing probably works when gaming but wasnt giving the sort of immersion I had in mind. Not to mention they were very uncomfortable. I can share deep reviews of all these things I have used. Philips SHP9500 is my most cherished possession right now.
It's such a bad movie and I'll stop myself from saying anything more because it was so bad and I can't express how I feel without violating Reddit's content moderation.
Not a huge fan of Emily Blunt but it can be argued she was giving her best but I was too distracted by how terrible the movie was to care about her performance
This was the blueprint on which spoofs and gags were based off on — 20 years ago. The alien design made me wonder if the movie was dogshit maliciously or the director is just bad.
This was my first 1/5 star on letterboxd
Rarely, Netflix churn machine releases a movie that bypasses some of their "anti-quality" filters and ends up standing out amongst the pile of low effort, low budget, garbage. I think it is one of those movies. A solid 3/5 which in Netflix terms is Shawshank Redemption level (not my personal top movie, but just as a reference for rating of a not slop movie).
The fact that Netflix hasn't released a 3/5 recently tells me that the slop machine is optimized af and we don't have to worry about a quality Netflix original slipping through the cracks.
I want to buy a used Galaxy S24 Ultra. I will buy a non pta but something I want the option to PTA approve officially later. I want to know the price for 256 GB version and I want a guide on how to buy used phones in local markets especially this phone. Common terms to know, scams/issues, and checking for common issues and scams in used phones in local market. Thank you in advance.
Revisited this movie after years. Had a very negative experience. Totally wiped the excitement for this genre of movies and put the initial hype in perspective. What do you guys think. Especially about the general A24 vibe. There are some really good movies and Im excited for Backrooms which comes out this week on digital. But I feel like this one slipped through a lot of quality filters and got undeserved notoriety, purely because of shock value which were essentially formulaic cheap ploys.
