Bulgarian companies' EU expansion: Germany leads by a wide margin, but the reach distribution raises questions about Single Market depth

New data maps where 1,465 Bulgarian-headquartered companies maintain an active business footprint - offices, branches, subsidiaries, or registered entities - across EU member states.

The headline pattern is a strong westward orientation: Germany (402 companies), France (265), Spain (215), and Belgium (162) all rank ahead of some of Bulgaria's direct geographic neighbours. Germany alone accounts for nearly 27% of all cross-border footprints recorded. This is consistent with gravity model predictions modified by market size - Bulgaria's structural economic ties with Western European value chains (particularly in automotive supply, IT services, and logistics) appear to be the dominant pull factor over geographic proximity.

Regional ties remain visible but secondary: Romania (313) and Greece (192) - both sharing a land or sea border with Bulgaria - rank 2nd and 5th respectively. This positioning suggests geographic proximity retains explanatory power at moderate market size, but cannot compete with the absorptive capacity of larger economies.

The reach distribution is arguably the more structurally telling finding. Of the 1,465 companies with any EU footprint:

  • 1,073 (73%) are present in just one EU country beyond Bulgaria
  • Only 103 (7%) have a footprint spanning 5 or more EU markets

On the industry side, Software & IT Services leads with 132 companies (9.0% of total) - a sector where cross-border service delivery is structurally easier than in physical industries. Freight Transport (53 companies) appearing alongside Travel Agencies (67) and Accommodation (63) may reflect Bulgaria's role as a transit economy and tourism source market.

Interested in whether others see the 1-country concentration as a market friction signal or a rational SME strategy outcome.

Methodology: a company is counted as having a footprint in a country if Veridion's database records at least one active business location for that company in that country.

Software & IT Services is Portugal's #2 sector for EU cross-border expansion: 207 companies with a footprint across Europe [Data]

Data shows Portuguese companies operate across all top 10 EU economies

Sharing data mapping: where Portuguese companies have a business presence across the EU*:* 3,125 in total.

Spain leads with 1,595 companies, a natural Iberian integration story.

But what is more interesting from a Single Market perspective: France (863), Germany (522), Belgium (401), and the Netherlands (366) follow, and 66.4% of Portuguese companies with EU reach operate beyond their immediate neighbor.

Sectors: Accommodation, Software & IT Services, Real Estate, Travel Agencies, and Construction: Portugal's core economic strengths are being exercised freely across European borders.

This is freedom of establishment in practice.

A Portuguese hotel group in France, a software firm with a Berlin office, a construction company on projects in the Netherlands, these moves are only possible because of what the Single Market enables.

The question for this community: does Portugal's pattern (strong neighbor anchor, then significant wider EU reach) suggest that deeper integration would unlock even more cross-border activity for smaller and peripheral EU economies?

Cross-border business footprint of Portuguese companies across the EU: destination and sector breakdown [Data]

Sharing a data visualization from Veridion mapping the EU presence of Portuguese-headquartered companies by destination country and sector.

Key findings:

  • 3,125 Portuguese companies in total have at least one EU business location outside Portugal
  • Spain leads by a large margin (1,595 companies), followed by France (863) and Germany (522)
  • Belgium (401) and the Netherlands (366) complete the top 5: notable reach beyond the Iberian Peninsula

By sector:

  • Accommodation leads (211 companies, 6.8%), reflecting Portugal's tourism economy expanding outward
  • Software & IT Services is #2 (207, 6.6%): a near-parallel digital export layer
  • Real Estate Agents & Managers (176, 5.6%), likely tied to investment migration patterns and Portuguese diaspora activity
  • Travel Agencies (118, 3.8%) and General Contractors & Heavy Construction (86, 2.8%) complete the top 5

Economic interpretation:

Portugal's EU footprint reveals a bifurcated economy: a tourism and real estate layer exporting its domestic strengths, and an emerging digital services layer.

The high concentration in Spain (1,595 vs. 863 in France) is consistent with Iberian economic integration, but 66.4% going beyond Spain signals meaningful Single Market participation.

The construction sector reflects a historically strong Portuguese presence in EU infrastructure projects across France, Germany, and Benelux.
