Roki vs other 24 year olds' seasons

There was a rather disparaging post about Roki earlier today that included the following:

There are many, many opinions on what the Dodgers should do with Roki.
Send him down, move to the pen, etc.
Personally, I feel the Dodgers should stay the course.
Here's why...

He's 24 years old, in a foreign country and on a team of superstars. You put him on the Astros and he's their #1 or #2 starter.

He HAS the stuff, no doubt. It's just a matter of time which the Dodgers HAVE.

Let's take a look at some other 24 year olds' full seasons who started poorly:

Bob Gibson 3-6 — 5.61
Sandy Koufax 8-13 — 3.91
Nolan Ryan 10-14 — 3.97
Tom Glavine 10-12 — 4.28
John Smoltz started the season 2-11 — 5.16 at the All-Star break, recovered to finish 14-13 — 3.80
Pedro Martinez 13-10 — 3.70
Roy Halladay 4-7 — 6.47

This is by far no guarantee that he becomes one of these aces, but just imagine the fandom during those seasons for those players with their expectations.

Let's give Dave a break!

I know there are haters out there, but here are the stats.

We will never see a relief pitcher with a season like this again

Mike Marshall played for the Dodgers in 1974.

He was the first reliever in MLB history to win the Cy Young.

He made the All-Star team and came in 3rd in MVP voting.

Check out these stats:

Wins 15
Losses 12
ERA 2.42
Innings Pitched 208.1
Games Played 106
Games Started 0
Games Finished 83
Saves 21
WAR 4.1

NOTE: Another All-Star player named Mike Marshall also played for the Dodgers but in the 80's. He played RF/1B.

EDIT: Changed the WAR from 3.1 to 4.1 — which is Fan Graphs industry standard.

Poona will give up #95 and take #97

Poona really didn't HAVE to give it up. Class move.

#97 is the jersey number he wore in 5 seasons with the Hawks.

Roki hit triple digits vs Phillies

His first pitch of the game hit 100.1 mph, his first triple-digit pitch of the season. He later reached 100.4 mph and threw 14 pitches at 99 mph or harder, more than in any previous major-league game.

Apparently, he's been working alongside strength coach Travis Smith and it's working.

Gotta love the name of his forkball "Dragon Fork".

Not bad for a 6th starter in the rotation!
