CPU died, motherboard visually is fine - should I worry about inserting another CPU?

Hi there. Vague question since I don't have any way to test the hardware aside from just running it. I'm mostly looking at a "should I be worried" and "what are the odds" speculation lol.

I've got a P5A mobo that had an AMD K6-2 in it. It worked wonderfully for a year+ and then one morning wouldn't post. The CPU died, the mobo still functions with a different CPU. All of the capacitors are visually pristine, but there appeared to be NO thermal paste remaining on the CPU/heat sink, I noticed (I did not do a breakdown and rebuild when I found it, my bad).

I am considering putting another CPU in it (an older one even - I read that Socket 5 CPUs work in Socket 7 mobos and I want something slower, ideally in the sub 100mhz range). Thankfully what I want is a dime a dozen.

Thankfully these CPUs are cheap, but is it likely that the original CPU died because of the MOBO?

Is there anything I can test to see if the MOBO is a risk, without voltmeters or whatever? Again, visually it looks pristine. None of the caps are swollen or have any sign of damage, though I understand there can be invisible damage.

Once I get a CPU back into it is there software I can run that checks the health of the mobo?

Return to Zork - am I softlocked? (jokes)

EDIT: I am not! Thanks u/maWagner84 :)

I got three jokes - unfortunately I did not get the joke from Canuk, and if I un-duck him now he immediately kills me (well, turns me in to a duck).

I only have one zorkmid remaining so I can't pay the blacksmith to tell me his half joke, if that would even count.

Am I hosed?

(Yes, I know, save save save, but my most recent save is post ship in bottle)

Some kind of relic thing

This was in a recent lot I picked up. No clue what it is - the lot had a mix of old citadel, ral partha, heritage and reaper ranging from the 70s up to a few years ago so I don't even know where to begin.

This load was HEAVY

But my timing was perfect. There was a bunch of other old software but nothing I really wanted, I did one circuit of the store and came back and that was all gone - but I had the best stuff!

Thought bylaw was approaching the crowd to break them up, but they joined in watching the world cup...

Trying to find some wholesomeness in the world - it's one of those things, really, that if you look a little to the left or a little to the right about so many things: FIFA, law enforcement, etc. you can just get caught up in such a slog of conflicting emotions, debate and anger.

And indeed, I was apprehensive as I saw these Bylaw officers approaching the crowd on Gov't street* thinking they were there to break them up, but was delighted when they simply joined the crowd and watched the World Cup for a couple minutes before moving on :)

*A car had JUST gone by, but the drivers I see on gov't street these days seem to be pretty conscientious about foot traffic

Did anyone else see the "Karen Patrol" supercar?

I saw it a few days ago and now that I'm trying to tell a friend about it I can't find any evidence of it existing - I don't know cars well, it looked expensive. Like "supercar" expensive - super low to the ground, wide, weird curves and angles. Could be a 100,000 dollar car or a million dollar car for I know, I have no clue.

But it was painted in police colours - blocks of black and white - and the decal on the side said "KAREN PATROL" on it.

Did ANYONE else see it?

Good pound cake (specifically of the lemon variety) in town?

EDIT: Thanks for everyone's recommendations! I wound up going to the dutch bakery - I called around to a couple of other places but the answer was "not right now". Seems like 30 degree weather is not super popular pound cake weather. But the dutch bakery had a cherry pound cake which will do for now 😄

For reasons that may get my wife flagged by MCFD, my children are interested in trying some lemon pound cake. We don't drive but are downtown a couple times a week, otherwise I live in Tillicum and go to Esquimalt quite often.

Anyone know anything about this release?

https://preview.redd.it/tptsr1kzsq7h1.jpg?width=1470&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=697d33bc9dc7256c6b8e46f0deabd3aad2be9288

I could not find a place to ask about Microprose in general, I feel like this would be the best place to ask where I had an OK chance of someone knowing an answer.

I can find this release mentioned on the University of Waterloo archives and some auction site I need to log in to to see. But I can't figure out what this is from.

Not that I am NOT looking for a price - I'm keeping it lol. But is it from a microprose collection? Was it a PC pack-in or something? I really can't find anything about it and am curious. The disc looks untouched and the inserts are in nice condition, so I'll put it in a fresh jewel case and put it on the shelf with the rest of my civ stuff 😄

This building in Chinatown is on fire and all of downtown that's downwind of it now smells like incense.

That's the QVs parking lot next to it. Half of Vic FD is on the scene so hopefully they're getting it under control, I'm waiting at a bus stop up on Douglas and the street is filled with smoke though.

UPDATE: https://www.ctvnews.ca/vancouver/video/2026/06/16/fire-damages-historic-tam-kung-temple-in-victorias-chinatown/

Not a tonne of information. It mentions a conference that would release more details but I can't find any more info.

Badge identification help!

EDIT: It's been established as being brownies, probably from some Revel or specific event. The exact details of its origin aren't pinpointed.

Hi there! My wife found this in her old stuff - but her father was in scouts his entire life too. So it might be from scouts or guides, the latest it could be dated was the 90s (or very early 00s?). Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Is there a term for when a sentence gets reduced to a couple of words with the same meaning? IE "how do" being understood as "how do you do"

Probably a better way to word the question but that's what my tired brain can come up with. I also realize there might not be a specific term for this sort of thing.

Basically, abbreviations but for whole sentences instead of just a word.

But emphasis is less on the casual/formal shift than just the number of words changing. I have been thinking about this because I don't like when my children just say "I want food" - I teach them to ask the more specific question, like "can you get me food". I don't actually care if they say "please", BUT i realized I was fine with "food, please" because it implies "can you get me food, please". Same meaning, fraction of the words.
