When does disability language start feeling more awkward than respectful?
I keep seeing completely different opinions about what respectful disability language is supposed to sound like.
“Person with a disability” is often presented as the safer choice, while plenty of people seem to prefer “disabled person” and find some of the softer alternatives more awkward than the word disabled itself.
I’m reviewing inclusive wording for fashion copy and don’t want to make assumptions about how this language actually lands.
When brands talk about disability or adaptive products, what wording feels normal to you? And what tends to come across as patronizing, performative, or just unnecessary?
