Cluck after installing 034 lowing springs
I recently installed 034 lowering springs on my MK7 GTI, and ever since then I’ve had a terrible clunk/pop coming from the front suspension that is driving me insane.
The noise only happens at low speeds over both small and large bumps, speed bumps, and when going in and out of driveways. It does not happen at higher speeds, and it does not happen while turning (I can make continuous circles or go through consistent left/right turns with no noise). The car drives and handles great otherwise.
Here’s everything I’ve replaced or checked:
- Installed 034 lowering springs
- Replaced front top hats and strut bearings
- Swapped in a lower-mileage strut assembly with less than 20,000 miles to rule out the original strut
- Replaced both front sway bar end links
- Replaced suspension hardware where required
- Re-torqued every single suspension bolt and verified everything is torqued to spec
- Checked everything multiple times to make sure it is seated correctly
I’m honestly at a loss. I cannot figure out what is causing this clunk/pop, and it’s becoming extremely frustrating.
Has anyone else experienced this after installing 034 lowering springs on an MK7 GTI? If so, what ended up being the cause? I’m open to any ideas because I feel like I’ve checked almost everything.

Installed 034 lowering springs.
Replaced the top hats and strut bearings.
Swapped in a lower-mileage strut assembly with less than 20,000 miles because I verified the original wasn’t the issue.
Replaced both sway bar end links.
Every suspension bolt was replaced where required and torqued to the proper spec with the suspension loaded where applicable.
I’ve checked that everything is seated correctly multiple times.

Lowing springs popping
Just installed lowering springs and replaced the top hats and strut bearings on my front suspension. I made sure everything was properly seated, including the lower rubber spring isolator, and everything has been torqued to spec.
I’m having a crazy popping/binding noise coming from the springs when going over small bumps at low speeds (driveways, parking lots, etc.). It does not happen while turning.
I noticed that when the car is raised up, if I pull hard on the spring, it has a very slight amount of side-to-side movement. It’s extremely minimal, but I can feel it. This seems to be coming from the brand-new bearing area.
Is this normal, or does this indicate a bad bearing/top hat setup? Has anyone experienced the spring binding or popping after installing lowering springs? I’m running out of ideas and it’s driving me crazy.
Lowing spring knock
I recently installed 034Motorsport lowering springs on my MK7 GTI, and ever since the install I've had a clunking/popping noise over small bumps at low speeds and when pulling into or out of driveways. It does not happen at higher speeds, and it also doesn't happen while turning.
I lifted the car to inspect everything and noticed the front spring can move slightly by hand, making almost the exact same noise that I'm hearing while driving.
Here's what I've already checked:
- Installed a new strut top hat and new strut bearing.
- The strut/shock only has about 10,000 miles on it, so it's basically new.
- Loosened and re-torqued the top strut nut to 44 ft-lbs.
- Verified the spring is fully seated in the lower spring perch and correctly positioned in the rubber isolator.
Has anyone run into this before or have any ideas what could be causing it? I'm trying to figure out if a small amount of spring movement is normal or if something else in the strut assembly could be causing the noise.
034 rear spring, which side is the top
Do I have this the correct orientation or is it the other way around?
Coil over install passenger side
I keep hearing that you don’t need to disconnect the axle at all for the passenger side and you will have room to get the strut out of the knuckle. Is this true?
About to do lowering Springs any tips?
Hey everyone,
I’m about to install 034 lowering springs on my 2017 MK7 GTI in about a week and wanted to see if anyone has any tips, tricks, or things I should watch out for while I’m in there.
Here’s what I already have:
✅ Brand new shocks
✅ 034 lowering springs
✅ New front strut top hats
✅ New front strut bearings
✅ New strut nuts
✅ New axle bolts (planning to remove the axle bolt for extra movement instead of using the 2×4 method)
✅ New 034 front and rear bump stops
Am I missing anything crucial while everything is apart? Should I replace any other one-time-use hardware or wear items?
Also, for those who have done this job:
Any tips to make the install easier?
Any issues with removing the axle bolt method versus the 2×4 method?
Anything you wish you had replaced while you were in there?
Any alignment specs or recommendations after the install?
