What would you most like to find in a time capsule?

Golden age paperback, ya accessible, maybe heinlein i was running through his work then.

Humanity develops a portal to new worlds. Our hero qualified to emigrate but chickens out and missed his chance. He lives in a small rural community that becomes increasingly isolated as all the cities empty and inteligent people have all fled to the colonies. Towards the end a warlord rises.

Thats all i got. Any help?

1st playthrouh, i built yhe prawn, then it was so slow i got the cyclops to carry it around. But the cyclops was a bit too high to jump into where it was built. So i left the prawn and, for the first time fired up the cyclops controls and pressed buttons until i started going down. Crushed my prawn in an instant, couldn't even recover any mats.
