r/MovieRecommendations

I can´t deal with emotionally taxing movies but ive watched a total of three movies in my life and want to expand my horizons. Please help.

Long story short, ive been in a rough spot for a while. For no reason at all, after a lifetime of barely watching movies, im kinda interested in watching "the classics", but if i pick a random "1000 movies to watch before you die" im afraid i will run into a Grave of the fireflies or a Boy in stripped pijamas scenario.

It doesnt necessarily need to be feel good-y, I just really can´t deal with super taxing movies whose entire message is just... bleak, like Clockwork orange or Old country for old men rn (havent watch this last one so maybe im mistaken). I just literally dont know the ending/plot of any of the "must watch" movies, and i dont wanna google "does dead poets society have a depressing ending??" and spoil myself everything. Im okay with bittersweet like parasites or the life of pi, but is there any of the "Big Ones" that i should stay away from?? Ive literally only watched Devils wears prada, so its easier to tell me which movies dont fit my criteria, vs those that do

I realize this is gonna spoil a couple movies just by sheer nature of the question, but better six than fifty. I dont know what shawshank redemption is even about, for example. I wanna go into as many movies as i can with a completely free mind.

Movies where the main character slowly ruins their own life without realizing it?

Looking for movies where the character keeps making worse decisions and you can feel everything slowly falling apart. Could be drama, thriller, psychological, or even dark comedy. I like movies that start normal but become more stressful or uncomfortable as they go on.

Looking for films that are real and uncomfortable.

I’ll just list some of my favorites because that’s basically my taste:

Shame

Happiness

Naked

Daddio

Into the Wild

Little Children

I usually connect with movies that feel emotionally raw, lonely, intimate, uncomfortable, human, atmospheric, or psychologically honest. Doesn’t matter if it’s slow or depressing as long as it feels real

70s/80s/90s Horrors and Thrillers That Take Place In Big, Heritage Mansions?

Any subgenre. Just really want more big massive house (old fashioned mansions, manors, fancy houses, etc) horror movies. From possessions to hauntings to slashers, it all counts.

Thanks!

Thrillers that could actually happen, not supernatural.

I have 8 days off and I’m looking for some good thrillers (in English) that have a realism element to them. I’m not interested in ghosts, the supernatural, or aliens.

I’m also not looking for a grotesque horror movie like TCM, The Hill’s Have Eyes, or Wrong Turn. I enjoyed those, but it’s just not what I’m in the mood for.

Thrillers I’ve seen and enjoyed:
* The Ritual (although the ending was… meh, the rest of the movie had a fantastic vibe).
* Backcountry (LOVED this movie)
* The Woman in the Window
* The Witch (I know, supernatural, but still kind of felt like it had that element of realism to me)
* Scream
* Shutter Island
* Don’t scream (?) - idk, the one with the deaf girl in her house.
* Vacancy - this terrified me

I’ve been craving another “stalked in the woods” style movie, but I’ll take anything at this point.

Don’t care what streaming service it’s on, I’ll rent if needed.

Edit: tons of great picks in here for me to check out. Already watched one and it was a good watch.
I’m surprised no one mentioned Deliverance, and I’m surprised I still haven’t seen it. Thats going to change today.
I also forgot Vacancy in my list at first, which I’m kicking myself for. Such a good movie.

The Voices (2014)

The dark comedy features Ryan Reynolds breaking out of the same character he always seems to play. Anna Kendrick is a nice addition as a supporting character. Sing a song, sing a happy song…

70s/80s/90s Era Horrors or Thrillers That Are In A Boarding School?

I know Suspiria, The Devils Backbone, Phenomena and Aenigma off the top of my head. So, something that isn’t them.

Preferably a girls boarding school for personal relevance (I went to one of those LOL) but anything counts.

Thanks!

Movies to make me feel things, *besides* sadness

Hi y’all, not looking to cry my eyes out, just want to really feel something, anything. Can be anger, joy, wonder, disgust. What are your favorite movies that make you feel things?

There can be sadness included, but if I felt the need to seek out movies that just make me cry I’d just look at every other post in this sub.

Cold, dark, dreary, depressing movie that gives off this vibe (ignoring its squidward)?

Mostly the vibe of the background picture. I love how cold and awful and depressing it is. Doesn’t have to be a war movie. Just something that will make me truly depressed and that has the vibe of the image. I have lived with depression all of my life, and now that it is gone I yearn for it again.

Movies where the main character slowly becomes isolated or disconnected from everyone around them?

Looking for movies where you slowly watch the character drift away from people mentally or emotionally. Doesn't have to be horror. Drama, thriller, or psychological movies are all fine. I really like movies with a heavy atmosphere and a slow buildup.

No Happy Endings: 25 Unforgettable Movies Where the Villain Wins

Cinema has given us plenty of heroes, but the ones that truly haunt us are the movies where the villain wins, and the audience is left carrying the discomfort home. These films stay with us long after the credits roll, leaving us uncomfortable, emotionally overwhelmed, and unsettled since they don’t provide solace, closure, or happy endings. This list is not limited to one genre. It moves through political thrillers, neo-noir mysteries, psychological horror, folk horror, westerns, crime dramas, and more. Alongside widely celebrated masterpieces, you will also find overlooked gems, cult favorites, and newer films that deserve far more attention than they get.

The Outfit

Simply splendid. This movie is about a man running his tailoring business which also serves as a front for the mob in his neighborhood to drop cash and notes. The attention to detail and the acting in this movie was genuinely phenomenal especially nearer the end. In the first half it felt as if the movie was just a typical tell instead of show kinda ordeal but then it all came together and I was blown away. I really enjoyed it and I hope y’all do too (if you do end up watching it). Also I’m sorry if I’m not selling it well or describing it in a good way I’m not really a movie critic this is just one of my favorite movies and I want more people to see it.

Movies About Obsession

I just watched Obsession in cinemas yesterday and I’ve realised that I really enjoy intense movies about people slowly becoming more and more obsessed with someone, so I’m looking for movies like that if anyone knows of any. It can include trying to become them/ take over their life, revenge, etc, just as long as there’s some sort of infatuation/ stalking. Movies that I enjoyed that fit the vibe are:

The Hand That Rocks The Cradle (remake was awful though)

Single White Female

Fatal Attraction

Unlawful Entry

Cape Fear (didn’t love this but still a good movie imo)

Thank you in advance :))

also I didn’t feel the need to spoiler tag this even though I mentioned Obsession, considering the title gives away what the movie is about 😅

Movies where the existence of a monster feels almost absurd to the people?

Real specific, but many of the monster-themed movies I've watched show the monster, people being scared of it, and then it's kind of normalized for existing. I want to see something where people almost go insane that something almost fictional exists in the world.

Movies that feel lonely but comforting at the same time?

Looking for movies with a quiet or lonely vibe but still somehow comforting to watch.

Could be about someone dealing with life, being lost, starting over, or just going through normal everyday things. Any genre is fine.
