I love SA and frankly, I enjoy CP. Also I’m enjoying PP lately.

Acronyms are awesome!

I enjoy Second Apocolaypse and I also like Cyber-Punk and I’ve been watching a few Let’s Plays of Phoenix Point to scratch that XCOM itch lately. (Albeit no Let’s Play does it justice.)

How ‘bout you?

[recommend me] A movie like Frisky Dingo?

Absurdist animated comedy that was weirdly prescient, making it both “before its time” and yielding multiple actors who would go on to have great careers.

(FYI: it was a 11 minute long show poking fun at the superhero genre that started roughly a year or few before the Marvel craze back ‘round 07, yet stands on its own. Something I consider quintessential millennial humour along with “Legend of Neil” and Bitey from “Brackenwood”.)

It was a once-in-a-generation event so I’m not expecting much but I’m curious to see what gets thrown around as a rec regardless.

***

PS: Archer is a direct descendant yet not quite what I’m looking for. It’s not nearly the same. The closest (IMHO) I’ve found myself is Farzar.

* But more to the point I’m curious if in particular a movie manages the same. Not a show. Other shows come near to the mark but movies? I can’t think of, well, any, TbH.

I want to watch some XCOM competency porn. (Let’s Plays)

I’ve been watching some Let’s Plays but they are… not very good at this type of game. (Ex. Consistently screwing up their own overwatches, running into mobs, and using whichever unit happens to come first instead of planning out their turn order.)

So I’m looking for recommendations of some Let’s Plays/walkthroughs of XCOM (or any game similar for that matter, I’d love to watch something new) by someone who is stellar at it.

Intelligent tactics and stunning strategic forethought on clear display.

[2e8 Spoiler] Quick question about a Nightcrawler power:

Does he have to be touching every single person to teleport them, or if someone he’s touching is holding someone else can he teleport them as well?

(Ex. can he teleport a circle of multiple people holding each other’s hands just by grasping two people?)

More?

Do you want more after The Unholy Consult or does the series end there? (Regardless of a prequel and all in our humble opinions.)

[Wrong Answers!] If you could sum this sub up in one sentence?

I don’t disagree, I just find it amusing that that’s how this sub is characterized. (I assume by AI…)

How else would you concisely sum up this place in, er, a similarly brutally honest vein?

Fun, bright, fast-paced action/comedy movie, live or animated, from the past 20 years or so that may have flown under the radar? (With a dash of sci-fi or fantasy but not necessary.)

I love fantasy and sci-fi but all the movies and shows I have in the backlog are cerebral slowburns that I’m not in the mood for. (I’ve seen everything else it seems.)

Some examples of the itch I’m hoping to scratch:

Dungeons & Dragons: Honour Among Thieves (really wish it was getting a sequel.)

Lego Movie, but not something from this franchise.

Top Gun: Maverick

Speed Racer

The Martian/PHM

Starship Troopers (1/animated)

Tron: Legacy (I have Uprising on my list still but am waiting to rewatch legacy one of these years before I give it a shot.)

[2e8 Spoilers] A theory, a question, and a tidbit.

Establishing the series of events:

Apocalypse takes over Gambit, becomes Death.

Gambit is still in there.

Candra steals a piece of power of Apocalypse. (Long ago through betrayal of love.)

Death takes that piece and puts it in Rogue.

Xavier fails to save Gambit in a mind-war with Apocalypse/Death.

Through Rogue’s love she seems to save Gambit.

Gambit is now in temporary control and seems to return to normal.

***

Rogue now has a portion of the power of Apocalypse and Apocalypse is possibly looking for new housing after Gambit takes control.

My theory and leading to my question is, does it then make sense that he could potentially take over Rogue given she possesses an avenue/conduit via now having some of his displaced power?

This question is for the comic readers, without getting too spoilery given I haven’t read many, does Rogue ever become something wherein that joining/possession would make sense the writers could be aiming for?

***

Finally the tidbit:

Just something I noticed really. Apocalypse loved Candra. He gave her a part of himself. She betrayed him.

When he merged with Gambit that capacity to love seems to exist in Death. And what’s the first thing he does? Takes that portion back and “gives” it to Rogue. Gambit’s love.

Just found that parallel noteworthy, particularly given the intro flashback to that episode has Rogue talking to Apocalypse in the past about love making life worthwhile.

[2000s+] Animated movies for Adults?

Example: like Mars Express. (With preferably with a great Eng. dub like that one if another language..)

Not animated movies that have jokes that bypass kids but land with adults, like most of them like Toy Story, WALLE, or Puss in Boots. Love ‘em but not what I’m looking for. But aim for adults in the first place.

(I could tell in less than the first five minutes of Mars Express that it was something quite unlike its contemporaries. The way it set itself early on was consummate storytelling and more than that, it was establishing itself with multiple sci-fi tropes at once as a signal of what was to come. It was just f’n brilliant TBH.)

PS: (2000’s plus because I’m old and anything from the 90s/80s would be a dead recommendation I’ve already seen/heard of.)

PPS: No need to recommend TV series like Cyberpunk, Arcane, Castlevania, Devil May Cry. Etc. (Seen em all too. Love em all too!!!)

What are your guys dishonest thoughts on the Orville?

I’ve seen every episode of SNW and have the full insights to see how a startrek fan would react to this, I loved the Orville though it would be warmer if he was able to make it in the startrek universe because everything is hawter with Vulcans.

ps: context is king

What do you think of the Sranc compared with the goblins of Buehlman’s world?

Which is worse, which do you find more interesting?

Who is putting out the best Let’s Plays of this game?

It’s a small game so there won’t be a wide variety, still curious if anyone has a different/better recommendation. (And by virtue of this post I’m giving my opinion on the two I’ve watched.)

So far I’ve watched Baraforge and Derava.

Baraforge
Pros:
- Has the best sound balancing. Can hear the music and ingame sounds.
- Seems to really get into the game and provides fun commentary.

Cons:
- Playing on normal and makes a lot of mistakes. (Ex. Stealthing his Raven and forgets to re-engage with it so it just sits there forever doing absolutely nothing.)

Derava:
Pros:
- playing on Veteran and seems a bit more capable in general. Still not the best at it but is smarter about his gameplay than alternatives.
- Takes time to think about things. (Something I appreciate. Particularly in a game that lets you pause.)

Cons:
- Terribly sound balancing. Can’t hear the music and speaks way too softly.
- Doesn’t engage with the content, seems to get frustrated instead of having fun with it.

***

Who else is putting out content and do you think there any that are doing better as a whole? Me as a half-decent gamer can see a lot of strategic and tactical options I just haven’t seen explored in any runs by streamers. But that doesn’t (necessarily) mean no one is doing it, just that I haven’t run into anyone. I’d love to see someone aim for long term strategies and try to build skill/ability combinations for example.

TL;DR: Any recs to watch someone who seems particularly great at the game?

Thought you all might also get a kick out of this, the narrator for MoO:CtS, Michael Dorn on the Dropping Names podcast hosted by Jonathan Frakes and Brent Spiner.

You may know them better as Worf, Riker, and Data.

Just going to start it myself, thought I’d share.

Where do you see humanity in the future?

Nothing to do with the books really, but everything to do with the crowd the books assemble. (Smart, philosophical, and pragmatic to a dour unhappy yet realistic fault.)

***

Where do you see humanity (realistically headed) in our future?

  1. In a thousand years?
  2. In ten thousand?
  3. In a hundred thousand?
  4. In a million?
  5. A billion?

***

I think in a thousand our reliance on technology as our species primary mode of progression will see us dramatically alter our perception of information. It already has and we’re living during one of the more drastic changes. Lines in the dirt to ink on papyrus to printing presses to the internet.

How we digest information will define us. (For now.)

Yet there’s a bandwidth-funnel and a top-level wisdom we’ll achieve that must plateau at some point. Choosing what we learn may become more important than what we memorize.

Augmented Reality, AI companions, we’ll design better ways to compress and decide. But will we overclock? (Of course we’ll try to, and then what?)

And that’s just at a thousand and in my limited imagination.

Where do we go from there? In your opinion?

What happened behind-the-scenes in the show that stuck with you the most? (Could be a small detail, something huge, something funny, or tragic. Not necessarily the most impactful.)

I think I know quite a few but I’m curious if any crop up I haven’t heard of before too.

This show in particular opened my eyes to the business/human side of television. At the time in the late 90s I just didn’t think of TV shows having to deal with issues like actors having to leave because of mental health or career opportunities, or falling out with cast/crew/showrunners.

I never questioned why Sinclair left even. It simply “was”.

Eventually in a rewatch I did wonder why they got rid of Talia though. And that sparked my first search where I found out she left for career reasons and JMS had trapdoors, and then a whole rabbit-hole opened up from there.

This show seems to be riddled with behind-the-scenes issues that made it into something very different than it would have been otherwise. In some cases, for the better even.

Along with immaculate foreshadowing that aspect of the show is one of my favourite things to read about. And there always seems to be more and more little tidbits I find out. (Or forgot and get reminded of ‘cause, y’know. Age is catching up and I always did have the memory of a steel sieve or a particularly dull goldfish.)

What line has the most square-footage?

There are a lot of quotes from this show that pop up in my head regularly. Not the One, pebbles/avalanche, understanding is a three-edged sword, etc…

But what’s the one you most frequently remember?

(Not the best one necessarily, rather the one that just keeps cycling ‘round and ‘round without surcease. Ie. what has the most square-footage/realestate for free.)

As fans of Second Apocalypse, can you give me a spoiler free take on Blood Meridian?

Getting close to finishing the current series I’m on, exploring what I want to read next.

I’ve seen Blood Meridian suggested a few times on this sub and got reminded of it elsewhere, sort of prompting this post. Don’t know a thing about it though.

Would you recommend it to a fellow Bakker fan, and if so, why? Or why not? (w/o too many spoilers pls.)

Quick Question: is there a list of everyone/thing Morph has morphed into? (In this show.)

Randomly got curious if someone’s been keeping track. Thought it’d be interesting to see in its entirety.

What else comes close? (Any media, show, movie, game, book, comic, etc.)

Curious what you think is similar to Blue Eye Samurai.

Castlevania: Nocturne, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Arcane have similar story moments but are so distinctive I can’t say they’re properly “close”. Love ‘em all though.

***

Any games that feel similar? I love watching Let’s Plays. (Currently enjoying a Hollow Knight binge.)

Vir saying “I’m sorry” in the lift is one of the most courageous yet understated moments in the show.

Not underrated, to be clear. I think we all felt it, the impact. Which is why I’m making this post.

But I do think it’s understated. It’s overshadowed by Katsulas’ performance, the deadpan voice. “Dead. Dead. Dead. Dead...“

But the mere seconds before that, between when Vir recognizes he’s in the same elevator and when he turns around. That moment, when he confronts G’Kar. When he turns around and faces him.

That, is the courage of a simple man in an impossible position. That’s something That resonates in me now. It’s a situation many of us have been faced with in moment if not in specific, when we could’ve turned and said anything, when we could have apologized. But how many of us do? Instead we just awkwardly sit it out. We don’t turn and acknowledge.
