Why do companies act shocked when you leave after being underpaid for years?

Genuinely curious if this is just normal now...

I’ve seen so many companies act surprised when someone quits, even though they’ve been giving tiny raises for years and acting like that’s somehow enough.

I was looking around and found a bunch of roles that seem to pay way better for basically the same level of experience. So if people leave, is that really shocking?

It feels like some managers assume everyone will just stay forever out of loyalty, but then act offended when people finally realize they can do better elsewhere. Maybe I’m being too cynical.. but it’s hard not to feel like they only care once you’re already halfway out the door

Has anyone else had a boss suddenly act confused when you gave your notice?

What are some things from past decades that were objectively hazardous or a nightmare, but have been romanticized by history?

I'm looking for documented historical facts like old consumer products, workplace conditions, infrastructure, or daily habits that people thought were great or normal at the time, but were actually completely miserable or dangerous by today's standards.

And can you get nicotine withdrawal if you stop after those two weeks? Or is it too short amount of time? If yes, what are the symptoms?

Why psychedelics (shrooms), weed and caffeine have no effect on some people?

Shortly, I only reacted to one of those things once, which was when eating my first edible. I had a very bad trip back then and vomited. Took more edibles after, smoked weed and hash before, from many sources, in different ways, no reaction. Never had any reaction after coffee, energy drinks. Tried shrooms (15g Tampanensis, from authorized coffee shop), zero reaction. My boyfriend took the same ones, same dose and he was high af. I wanna know why my brain doesn't really allow it? Yes I take SSRIs but it never worked, even when I wasn't on any meds. Possible ADHD/being anywhere on spectrum, before diagnosis tho.
