Lingering, irritating sweet smell on my violin two weeks after cleaning—is this normal?

10 days ago, I had my violin cleaned and polished at a shop I teach at. The luthier finished the cleaning and polishing in about 30 minutes and handed my violin to me incredibly wet and greasy. (It was so greasy that it stained my violin blanket as shown in the picture attached.)

Since this was the first time I took my violin for a cleaning at a store, I didn’t know any better. I played and taught with the wet violin in the tiny lesson rooms we have at the shop in which the odor was REALLY strong. (I even made a post earlier about exposure risk because the smell felt so overwhelming.) I went back home and tried my best to dry the violin with a cloth as much as possible and even started airing my violin out.

Whatever product he used must have gotten on the fittings and even on the bridge because despite airing out my violin and case these last ten days, the smell still remains. The smell has been bothering me so much that I end up having an irritated throat while practicing that goes away overnight when I’m away from the instrument.

I have asked the shop owner multiple times what product he used and he has refused to tell me. The only thing he told me was that it is some type of alcohol and polish but when I asked for the name, he said it had no name.

Luthiers please help me with the following questions:

  1. How do I get rid of the odor? It’s irritating me.

  2. What could he have used for me to still smell it and have it physically irritate me? It’s sweet, woody, and chemical like. Is it even safe to practice on my violin anymore? I still have to teach and have rehearsals coming up.

Violin still smells after cleaning/polish done last week

Last week, I made a post about my luthier directly handing me my violin after cleaning and polishing it. The post was titled “Exposure risk from cleaner/polish.” Whatever he used made my violin wet and greasy for two days. It was also on my fittings as well and my violin blanket inside my case got stained.

By now, the violin is completely dry but the smell is bothering me every time I practice. I have been airing it out by placing it case free in my living room and the smell still hasn’t gotten better. What can I do about this? Should I just wait it out? Is this normal? What cleaner or polish would do this? This is the first time I get my professional instrument cleaned like this so I’m not sure if this is unusual. I also had an open seam on it. Perhaps the glue is what smells?

Exposure risk from cleaner/polish

I recently had my violin cleaned at a shop, and when I got it back, there was a very strong solvent/paint-thinner-like smell. The luthier had also applied so much cleaner or polish that the violin felt greasy, and it even transferred onto my hands and case. Even the violin cover my case comes with is now stained with the cleaner or polish.

He gave it back to me while I was teaching lessons at the store and I was with the violin for about 4 hours in a tiny lesson room. The smell was super strong the entire time! My hands were so super greasy.

This might sound silly but I’m worried about whether this could increase cancer risk due to solvent exposure, especially since the room was small and not well ventilated.

Also, it’s the next day and my violin still smells a bit and is pretty greasy.

Filling needs replacing after a year. Is this common?

My dentist told me that the filling she did a year ago go might need replacement in 6 months. I’m confused. I thought fillings were supposed to last for several years. The edges feel rough. Should I trust her or should I have by filling done by a different dentist?

Filling needing to be replaced after a year. Is this normal?

My dentist told me that the filling she did last year might need replacement in six months and I’m really confused. I have heard that fillings last up to 10 years. Should I get it redone by her or go to a different dentist?

Here is some more information that might help things.

  1. After I this filling done, I has multiple adjustments. During one of the adjustments, it seems she drilled a little too far because since then, the edge of that molar feels a chunk got taken off. There is a tiny gap between the edges of my teeth. The best way I can describe this is that if feels like the edge of a Swiss cheese slice. She didn’t see anything wrong with the filling so I didn’t bother asking about it after adjusting since I didn’t feel any pain. However, immediately when I got it done, I felt “OMG she took out a tiny chunk of my molar”
  2. I use an electric toothbrush and floss every night. I had very little plaque. The cleaning lasted less than five minutes.
  3. I have been told I clench but my teeth show very little signs of bruxism. She told I might be clenching.

Do chamomile tea bag compresses help with chalazions?

I have a small chalazion I want to get rid of and I am wondering if any of you guys have tried chamomile tea bags or chamomile compresses?

Should I treat a barely noticeable chalazion? This is my first time having one. It’s a small bump underneath my eyelid that’s about the size as a grain of rice.

About 10 days ago I noticed my eyelid and lash line became a little inflamed after taking off my eye makeup. I also felt a little bit of tenderness and pain the first two days. I had even thought I burned my eyelid because the water I used to take off my mascara was actually quite hot.

The inflammation and pain went away but now I’m left with a small bump underneath. It’s barely visible but I’m wondering if I should treat it now so it doesn’t keep growing. If that’s the case, what do I do? Do I go to an eye doctor? Will it go away without doing anything? This is my first time experiencing this. Any help is appreciated.
