Unanimous indifference towards ‘Tongue’?

Hi guys. Long time Fontaines fan here but first time posting in this subreddit.

A lot of my friends from different circles are also really big on Fontaines, and like myself they were also super excited for the new record.

However, having spoken to many of them individually over the past week, I can honestly say the unanimous reaction I’ve had is “I didn’t really like Tongue”.

While I don’t hate the track, I have to admit I’m a lot less instantly drawn to the single compared to the vast majority of singles they’ve put out before their last few albums, where I’ve just thought “yeah banger.” On the first play.

Is this a wider opinion among Fontaines fans? And if so, why do we think that is?

Wikipedia tells us that “a Fenian is a member of a 19th-century Irish republican movement that sought independence from British rule, or a person who supports these goals.” It was also once used as a derogatory sectarian term that was weaponised against Irish Catholics and nationalists in the North. I say that in the past tense, because on their second album, Irish rap trio KNEECAP reclaim the term in a bold, triumphant, and slick fashion.
