One more questions about guns...

So, SWADE says "Reloading a...single bullet so that it’s ready to fire (chambered, cocked, etc.) is an Action."

But, if none of your Actions use Skill rolls, they can't invoke MAPs.

So, if I do nothing else, can I re-load my six-shooter all in one Turn?

Knowing how literal SW is, it seems to me that if they meant only "one bullet per Turn", they would have said it's a Limited Action...

Reloading a shotgun?

So, DaRules say reloading a "single bullet" into a chamber takes an Action. My player fired both barrels on her first Turn. I've read the example in the manual with firing a heavy crossbow first, *then* reloading which takes 2 actions, retroactively incurring a -4 on the crossbow shot. The shotgun user could do the same thing, but why bother with a -4 penalty on both shots?

What if on the next Turn, after reloading only one shell, then if she fired during that same Turn, the Shooting would be at -2 for the MAP. Have I got that right?

Or, she could spend one Turn just reloading both barrels (no MAP, since no roll), then on her next Turn fire both barrels again. That's effectively getting one shot per turn with no MAP. Or is it *only* one bullet per Turn, making it effectively a "limited Action"? But the RAW calls a reload an Action, not a Limited Action, and I've learned over the years that SW rules are *very* literal, so...

Any other ways to minimize penalties and maximize shooting rates with a shotgun?

Supers mind-reading : can you ask questions of the targets to get them thinking about what you want to know?

(I've been running into a lot of first-time situations that I've never had to handle in SW before, so thanks for everyone's recent help...)

As the title says - my player wants to ask a bad guy a question to get him thinking about it, then read his mind to get specific answers. The description of Mind Reading just says you can detect "surface thoughts and feelings" (on a Success).

If you wouldn't allow questions, how would you justify that to the player?

Thanks!

Are SWADE shotguns realistic?

Disclaimer : I used Google AI to get my information, which I know could be way off. I'm sure there's many people reading this who have had real-life experience with shotguns, and I gladly accept your thoughts and corrections.

For the first time in the 12 years I've been GM'ing SW, a player has a shotgun. They asked about its "angle of spread" (worrying about hitting other PCs), so I started asking Google AI some questions.

It said that at "short range" (4"), the spread is 2-4 (real) inches. No problem, that's going to do a lot of damage (3d6) to a single target.

At "medium range" (12"), the spread is 12-18 inches. That's still going to hit a single target, and 2d6 damage sounds about right.

But at "maximum range" (20"), the spread is 3-5 *feet*, meaning that many pellets miss the target and will lack the power to penetrate it, so 1d6 also sounds right.

So why in SWADE does a shotgun have the same range as many pistols and rifles (12/24/48)??? The first time I saw that, even before I went to Google, I thought "that can't be right, a shotgun has too much spread".

Supers' Object Reading - how do you handle it?

So, I've got a player who can use Object Reading, which I've never had to handle before. The RAW says it can "sense certain details about its past use or important events that happened in its presence." And "If he’s successful, he gets a vague impression of the information he’s looking for. With a raise, the information is more clear."

I bolded the last part because it seems to contradict the first part (unless "certain details" means details the user has chosen to look for, as opposed to more like "specific details", but ones they didn't specify in advance).

In specific, the player wanted to know about a machine the party had come across. They mentioned they wanted to use OR to figure out how to shut it down. They got a Raise, so I told them "You get the impression that the machine is meant to influence humans' mental states, such as imposing panic, sleep, compliance, etc." For the Raise I added "It is also not technically turned fully on right now, more like in a diagnostic mode".

So, how do you run it? Does the player specify some specific information they want, or do you give them just vague impressions which would generally be helpful towards moving the game forward? If the former, and the information they're looking for just didn't happen with/near the object, do you give them no info even on a Success?

Supers : Absorption + Reflection - why number of Wounds, not number of damage points?

So, I've got bad guys whose Toughness is higher than the PC using Absorption+Reflection. So the number of damage points that would inflict 1 Wound on the PC would only Shaken the bad guy that shot them.

I'm toying with the idea of house-ruling that it's the number of damage points that gets reflected, not the number of Wounds. This would make no difference once the damage points would inflict 2 or more Wounds on the PC, because they would inflict 1 or more Wounds on the bad guy, killing them anyway.

Any ideas why SWADE did it that way, and can anybody see any problems with the house-rule? Thanks!

Sanity check - RotR question (minimal spoilers)

At some point in the game, there's a combat with 8 ghouls against 5 PCs who'd just gotten their first Seasoned Advancement that was IMHO *way* too easy. The PCs didn't even take a single Wound, and most of the ghouls went down on the first or second PC attack attempt.

Part of the issue is that the first Seasoned Advancement unlocked a *lot* of pretty powerful Class Edges and Powers for all the PCs, so maybe that Advancement should have come after this scene?

Do you consider this to be balanced? I mean, I'm no sadist, but I'd like my bad guys to at least inflict a Wound or two in a combat...

I had classic gastroparesis symptoms from too much vitamin D

On the advice of my doctor, I started taking 10,000 IU of vitamin D a day. Many months later (long enough that I didn't make the connection), I gradually developed classic symptoms of gastroparesis - an extended feeling of fullness after eating, which progressed to feeling so nauseous after the first few bites of food that I was lucky if I ate half the meal. I slowly lost 20 pounds, with no end of the weight loss in sight. I was officially diagnosed as having gastroparesis by my primary care physician and a gastroenterologist.

Then, I went into the hospital (for an unrelated issue) for a week, and they didn't allow me any of my vitamins or medications. By the end of the week, the gastroparesis symptoms were completely gone! When I got home, I added my pills back to my daily regimen one at a time, and the day after I took the 10,000 IU vitamin D pill, I couldn't finish a meal! So I stopped taking it, and I've had *no* gastroparesis symptoms since. I'm back up to my normal weight.

Now, I'm not saying that all gastroparesis is caused by excess vitamin D, but I wanted to tell my story just in case someone with gastropareis who's taking high doses of vitamin D might maybe possibly find some relief.

GMs : how did you handle the scarecrow ghouls in RofR book 2 (minor spoilers)?

So, I'm running RotR in play-by-post, and I'm not sure how to describe what the players see in a way that doesn't immediately give everything away. I mean, the real scarecrows are mounted on wooden crosses, right? But I imagine that the ghoul scarecrows are just standing there in the fields, and that the PCs should be able to tell that they're not on a cross from a fair distance away. How can I describe things so that the players have to get close enough for the ghouls to be able to attack them before they can tell whether they're real scarecrows or ghouls?

Also, what about the straw? There'd be straw sticking out of the real scarecrows' shirt and pants cuffs, but the ghouls wouldn't have any (unless they're really that smart to think of that???). That'd be another dead (forgive the pun) giveaway.

Thanks!
