Hokkaido: the best Japan prefectural flag and it's not even close

The choice of colours together is just *chef's kiss*, don't you think?

From Wikipedia:

"The colours of the Hokkaido flag are based on the former Kuroda proposal, with navy blue representing the northern seas and sky as the background. The emblem placed in the center features a red seven-pointed star symbolizing the indomitable energy of Hokkaido residents, surrounded by white light representing brilliance and the snow and wind of the region."

I've always been interested in Japan's prefectural flags. I totally appreciate their minimalism, but most of them feel a bit too corporate or a bit "off" to me.

Even with Tokyo's flag, which symbolically is absolutely perfect (represents both the kanji 東 and 京 and the idea of a central nexus of Japan), the colour they chose (Edo purple), as much as it is perfect meaning-wise, is a bit too garish to my eyes.

Hokkaido strikes a perfect balance of simplicity and elegance imho.

They did it. They freaking did it.

They fully committed to the bit. I've learnt my lesson, I will never post reindeer again. I'm glad I can sealpost again.

World's Biggest Torii Gate (Wakayama, Japan)

Built in 2000 in steel, it marks the former site of the Kumano Hongū Taisha shrine, partially destroyed in a flood in 1889. The remaining wooden buildings were moved and reassembled uphill nearby — the current site — in 1891, where four deities were moved, while the other eight were enshrined in two stone monuments in the original site.

Torii gates are an architectural element of Shinto shrines, marking the threshold to sacred grounds.
