For those not getting the meme, mosasaurs and other marine reptiles were the dominant aquatic animals during the Mesozoic, going extinct alongside dinosaurs and other reptiles at the end of the Cretaceous. Had not been for their disappearance, seals and other aquatic mammals of today such as whales wouldn't exist, as with marine reptiles around they wouldn't haven gotten the sea free of competition to adapt to such enviroment, this is a little silly meme thanking mosasaurs for their sacrifice so we can have our favorite sea chonkers in the present.

Long-Nosed Fur Seals (AKA New Zealand Fur Seals) resting near the Murray Mouth, South Australia.

Prior the the millennium drought, Fur Seals were rare in the Lower Lakes and Coorong region, but now they’ve become permanent residents (much to many people’s annoyance as they steal fish and harass or sometimes even eat iconic Coorong birds such as pelicans and cormorants).

They are, however, a protected native species that was devastated by the sealing industry in the early 19th century, prized for their blubber and gorgeous fur coats. Their numbers have only recently recovered to pre-sealing levels, and now face a potentially existential threat from H5 bird flu, which has devastated seal populations in Patagonia and the sub-Antarctic.
