Returning to tennis after 12 years, racquet advice for an experienced player? 285–300g, 100 sq in
Hey all,
Looking for some racquet advice as I’m getting back into tennis after a 12-year break.
I’ve been playing since I was about 6 years old and played at a fairly decent/competitive level when I was younger, so my technique is pretty established. I’m now getting back into playing regularly, but I’m finding the current racquet market slightly overwhelming.
I would rate myself around 4ish as I have been playing for the past 2 weeks in a local league and am yet to drop a set, i have played ITF junior tournaments in the past.
At the moment I’m playing with an old 2012 Babolat Pure Drive, 300g / 100 sq in, and I also have an older Wilson Hyper 4.1 around 285–290g / 100 sq in.
I generally prefer a lighter, manoeuvrable racquet, but I don’t want to sacrifice too much power or stability. I think somewhere around 285–295g unstrung could be the sweet spot, although I’m open to 300g if the racquet swings easily.
My game is fairly all-court. I hit a moderate-topspin forehand, use my backhand slice a lot, like changing pace, hitting drop shots and using touch rather than just sitting on the baseline and ripping heavy topspin. I also want enough free power that I’m not having to work excessively hard for depth, particularly as I’m getting back into match play.
Im just genuinely out of touch with all the updates with tennis tech in the past decade but after picking up a racquet after so long, i am completely invested again and cant wait to buy a new racquet, my pure drive has a crack in it so I cannot change the strings.
The racquets I’m currently considering are Tecnifibre T-Fight 295 Isoflex, Solinco Whiteout V2 290, Solinco Blackout V2 285/300, Yonex EZONE 100L, HEAD Speed MP L, Babolat Pure Drive, and potentially the HEAD Instinct MP 300.
I don’t have a shop near me that is letting me demo any of the racquets so the decision I make, I will need to stick with it.
For anyone who’s played with several of these, what would you recommend for someone with an experienced game returning after a long break?
I’m particularly interested in power vs control, manoeuvrability, slice/touch, stability against heavier balls, and how they feel after 2–3 sets.
Also very open to other suggestions in the 285–300g / ~100 sq in range that I haven’t considered.
Thanks!
