Regenerative braking and coasting on Level 4 Rec

I'm experiencing really inconsistent behavior of the regenerative braking+coasting, is there something I should know about how it operates?

I have a lovely canyon road nearby I've been riding up and down. When I leave my house the regenerative features appear to be on and working, but by the time I get to the point in my journey where I WANT it (turning around at the top), it is no longer functioning. It's always on in the app, it just ceases to trigger on the bike itself.

Do the regenerative features disable under certain conditions? I do get a heat warning on occasion on the way up, is the overheating disabling regenerative features?

Brand new to ebikes, questions and unexpected things from first few rides

Just assembled my Aventon Rec 4 earlier this week, so BRAND brand new.

  • Is there a setting I can alter or is the bike supposed to fight me when I try to pedal faster than the top assisted speed? I realize there's a legal limit to the assistance, but lemme use my legs!
  • It also feels like it resists me with the assist off. Or is the bike just that heavy?
  • I assume the gearing is intentional according to laws/class, but I could certainly use a few higher gears at the top end. On a long flat road I'm pedaling faster than I'd like to be to maintain 28mph.
  • Small but unexpected: The throttle only goes up to class 2 (20mph) even when you've set the bike to class 3 (28mph)

What should I EDC? Used to carry a spare tube with a hand pump strapped to the frame.
