Gearing FRAM I (DD-879 Leary)

The Gearing-class destroyers were extensively modernized under the U.S. Navy’s Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization (FRAM) program from the late 1950s onward. FRAM upgrades improved radar, sonar, electronics, and anti-submarine weapons, allowing these World War II-era destroyers to remain effective during the Cold War. FRAM I was the more extensive conversion and typically added systems such as ASROC, Mk.32 torpedo tubes, and QH-50 DASH unmanned helicopter facilities.

USS Leary (DD-879) was a Gearing-class destroyer commissioned in 1945. She later served as the radar-picket destroyer DDR-879, taking part in Cold War operations including the Cuban Missile Crisis. After receiving a FRAM I modernization in 1964–65, Leary served during the Vietnam War in escort, search-and-rescue, and naval gunfire support roles. She was decommissioned in 1973 and transferred to the Spanish Navy as Lángara (D-64).
