Spark GO vs. Yamaha THR10X vs. Blackstar BEAM for Metal & Travel Practice?

Hey everyone,

I am moving abroad soon and looking for a compact desktop/practice amp that I can easily travel with. I mostly play heavy metal, thrash, and hard rock (lots of tight high-gain rhythm, fast downpicking, and palm-mute chugs).

My main priority is standalone speaker quality (playing out loud without headphones). I want something that doesn't sound completely thin, fizzy, or boxy on heavy riffs, while still being practical enough to pack in my luggage.

I’m currently torn between three very different options:

1. Positive Grid Spark GO

Pros: Ultra-portable, fits in any bag, endless presets via app, easy Bluetooth backing tracks.

Concerns: Does the tiny 2" speaker fall completely flat on palm-muted metal riffs? Is it just too boxy/thin for out-loud metal practice?

2. Yamaha THR10X (High-Gain Green Model)

Pros: Dedicated high-gain VCM amp models (5150/ENGL/Bogner vibes), physical 3-band EQ, 5 hardware preset buttons, solid metal chassis (safe for travel), tight low-end response.

Concerns: Discontinued (buying used), no Bluetooth/mobile app (needs USB or Aux for backing tracks).

3. Blackstar ID:Core BEAM

Pros: 20W stereo, built-in Bluetooth audio, wide stereo field, multi-instrument capability.

Concerns: Bulkiest and heaviest of the three (\~3.9 kg), and I worry the low-end is tuned broadly for bass/multimedia rather than focused, tight guitar chugs.

Questions for those who have owned or tried them:

Between the THR10X and Blackstar BEAM, how significant is the difference in high-gain tone quality, articulation, and palm-mute tightness through the speakers?

Is the Spark GO even a viable option if I plan to play through the built-in speaker rather than headphones 80% of the time?

If you were packing for an international move and needed the best balance of travel-friendliness and real metal tone, which one would you take?

Thanks in advance for the advice!

Positive Grid Spark Go

LTD EC-1000

Title: Dialing in an LTD EC-1000 with EMG 81/60 through an SSL2 and Neural DSP

Hi everyone. I recently moved from an Ibanez with passive humbuckers and a tremolo-style bridge to an LTD EC-1000 Vintage Black with an EMG 81/60 set. This is my first guitar with active pickups, so I’m currently recalibrating my usual signal chain.

I’m using the instrument input of an SSL2 MKII with Neural DSP plugins such as Nolly X, Gojira and Petrucci. My existing presets were dialed around the output level and frequency response of passive pickups, so I’m not expecting them to translate directly to the EMG 81. However, the bridge pickup currently feels somewhat dry and narrow to me; with certain settings the tone sounds both thin and congested. The palm-muted notes also feel less massive and punchy than they did on my old guitar.

A few questions for people using active EMGs with interfaces and amp sims:

- How do you approach gain staging between the SSL2 and Neural DSP? Do you leave the interface gain at minimum and make any necessary adjustment with the plugin’s input control?

- Do you normally reduce the plugin input level to prevent the EMG 81 from hitting the amp model too hard, or is reducing the amp gain enough?

- Are there any Neural DSP amp, cab/IR and microphone combinations that you particularly like with the EMG 81? Do you use less overdrive and gain than you would with passive pickups?

- How noticeable are battery voltage and pickup height with this particular set?

- How long did it take you to adapt your palm-muting position when moving from a tremolo-style bridge to a Tune-o-Matic? The right-hand geometry feels considerably different.

- For E-standard metal rhythm on a 24.75-inch scale, would you choose 10–46 or something with a heavier bottom end such as 10–52?

LTD ec1000 VB

Your Music Online (Italy)

Has anyone bought from Your Music Online (Italy)?

Hi everyone,

I'm planning a trip to Italy and I'm thinking about buying an ESP LTD EC-1000 from Your Music Online.

The guitar is listed as online only, but the website says it can be delivered to one of their stores within 1–2 days for in-store pickup.

I'm mainly looking for people who have actually purchased from this store.

- Are they a reliable dealer?

- Did everything go smoothly with the order and pickup?

- If you're a non-EU customer, were they able to issue a Tax Free (OTELLO/Global Blue/Planet) invoice?

- If you ordered online and collected the guitar in-store, was Tax Free still available?

I've already contacted the store but haven't received a reply yet, so I'd really appreciate any first-hand experiences.

Thanks!
