Question on damaged item already purchased
I recently moved and unfortunately the closest HG is 45 minutes away (previously it was 5 minutes from my house). With that move, I’ve needed to decorate/get essentials for my new place. I purchased a box of 12 drinking glasses, get them home, and of course one of the glasses is broken.
Since the store is so far away, it’s not easy to just pop over anymore. I went yesterday and brought the original box, the one broken glass (we are currently using the other glasses), and the receipt with me. I was hoping that they would have the same set and I would be able to get a non-broken glass out of the new set, and the store would mark down that box to “as is”. The cashier said they wouldn’t do that. Okay, that’s fine (and come to find out afterwards when I was looking around, they didn’t have the same set anymore).
But here’s what I don’t understand- she told me that in order for them to even mark down what I already purchased in order to refund the difference, that I would have to bring back all the other glasses as well. I’m sorry… what? I completely understand needing the broken glass to prove that there was damage, but why would they need to see the non-broken glasses to refund me the difference of what they would have marked it down to if they knew one was broken?
I wouldn’t be as annoyed if I didn’t already drive 45 minutes each way to get this settled, only to be told to go back home and come back for no reason.
Can someone please explain this thought process to me?
