Help diagnosing floppy drive issue

I recently bought a Macintosh SE running System 6.0.8, with a 40MB SCSI HD and 800K Floppy drive. The computer was well taken care of by the previous owner and only needed a minor cleaning when I brought it home.

However, the floppy drive refuses to read any disk that I put in it. I removed the drive to try and troubleshoot the problem with no luck. I took apart all the components, cleaned it with isopropyl alcohol, removed the old grease and applied new lubrication where needed. I was careful not to damage the read/write heads, and they look to be making good contact with the disk. The auto-eject mechanism had a broken gear, like so many other models, and I bought a replacement online but have yet to receive it, but I'm fairly certain that shouldn't effect the drives ability to read disks.

When I insert my Tetris 800K Disk it says "This disk damaged", but when I insert the Tetris 400K disk it says "This disk is unreadable". I also have blank Maxell 1.44MB disks which are double-sided, and when I try to insert them I get "This disk is unreadable" and when I try to format anything one/two-sided, I get "Initialization failed! This disk is write protected!". I don't have many other Mac formatted floppy disks to test the drive with, only a Carmen San Diego floppy for IBM/Tandy.

Given that one of my Tetris disks says "Damaged" while the rest gives me an "Unreadable" error, would that mean that the read/write heads are functioning at some level?

Has anyone had a similar problem with their classic Macintosh that can give me some advice?

Side note: I also purchased a BlueSCSI online a few days ago and plan on replacing the internal HDD with it, so I will soon be able to transfer files with ease via my MacBook, however I'd still like to have a functioning floppy drive. There's something very satisfying and nostalgic about using disks to transfer files.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Advice on Tongue & Groove Plane Buying

Hello everyone, I’m looking to purchase a tongue and groove plane but don’t have any experience using them. I am considering two options.

  1. Buy New - Lie Nielsen no. 48/49 $275

Or

  1. Buy Used - Stanley no. 48 price range $80-$150 on eBay

Any suggestions would be gladly welcomed. I’m leaning more towards the used Stanley option, merely due to budgetary reasons. Lie Nielsen is obviously a good solid choice, but their planes are very expensive and I don’t have that much extra cash in the bank right now.

Thanks!

Edit: I should also add that I’ll be using the plane for a few projects in the next month or so that involve installing tongue and groove paneling in my bedroom closet, as well as replacing some boards at a relatives house that are tongue and groove as well. So basically, it will get a lot of use on boards 6’-8’ long
