Resigned on first day, employer threatens me to pay notice amount

Joined this MNC two months ago and on the evening of the day of my joining, I got a better offer and a better role in another company. The very next day, less than 24 hours, I had told them that I won't be able to continue. By that time my onboarding was still in progress but they had already created my Employee ID and I'd filled my PF forms too. There was a heated discussion between the HRs and me and finally they had said that I would be marked as absconding in their systems and they let me go. Note that I had not even visited their office/neither got the welcome kit nor laptop/ID card and everything was done virtually. I got the separation letter days later mentioning that Resigned- not served notice.

After a few days, I was shocked to see my PF getting linked to that company but I de linked it successfully since I had not received a single rupee of salary from them, in fact I had not even my bank account details to them for salary updation.

I left this saga behind and joined my current company. I received my my first salary here, PF got linked successfully and it was good going. All of a suuden, I received a mail from that previous employer asking for notice period recovery dues. And if not paid in 10 days, legal action would be taken against me. Not a small amount, close to ~3L.

I'm really in a fix, what should be done?

TLDR: Joined a company, didn't get laptop/salary, was not put into project/real work and resigned the very next day. Now after 2 months they are asking me to pay notice recovery amount.
