How do we know any two fossils are the same species?

(Borrowed this meme from u/totally__not_kira on r/birdingmemes to illustrate my question)

If we find a whole herd of hadrosaurs in the same formation all buried together, I can understand how those are all probably relatives, but how can we know the Chicago Archaeopteryx and the Berlin Archeopteryx aren't different species. Like... if you found a Hooded Yellowthroat fossil and a Belding's Yellowthroat fossil, 100m years from now—even very complete—could a good paleontologist tell from their bones (or even feather imprints and melanosomes) that they are different species?

I acknowledge that species are basically fake and undefinable, but I hope the question still makes sense.

Chicago Loop, 50 stories up

Sorry for the terrible photos. This seemed bigger and browner than a chimney swift, so I figured it's a swift or swallow or something. Midday in the Chicago Loop, from around the 50th floor. I thought maybe the wing shape could be an indicator.

Is this a juvenile Cardinal? [Chicago]

Dark bill and not much of a crest, but it does have that Cardinal frown, so not sure.

The Flat Head S2003 doesn't rivet the coin pocket (repair)

It's a WW2 reproduction (they call this cut "wide taper"), which authentically doesn't include pocket rivets. Not sure if these count as bar tacks. Sorry I didn't take a before pick but the corner had come loose, and I sewed over it a bunch with a similar (but slightly lighter) colored thread. Anyway I think I did a pretty alright job, all things considered. I might do a similar repair on the back, where a thread has come out.

Question: Pic 3 is the back pocket. the arcuates are hand painted, and starting to disappear (I'm aware this is just part of the lifecycle of these jeans). Would it be stupid to sew them in, just kinda trace them with thread? On the fence about it.

Need advice on moving my doorbell up

Replacing a Ring doorbell that went bad. I'd like to move it up for improved camera placement, but I'm not sure the proper way.

  1. Doorbell wires aren't usually cat5 (or whatever this is), right?
  2. Is there a cord hider/channel that fits against siding?
  3. Is taking the siding off hard? Seems like that would be the cleanest fix, right?

Early wear & tear

~40 wears into my new Flat Head 12 oz and the top button on my button fly seems to have rubbed a little hole in the fly. Also a little thread coming loose on the pocket stitching. Advice?? Wash and take in for repairs? I'd like these to last a long time.
