Built MeshDrop: An open-source, zero-cloud P2P file sharing desktop app (Electron + React + Hyperswarm)

Hey r/electronjs community! 👋

I wanted to share a desktop app I’ve been building called **MeshDrop a zero-cloud, peer-to-peer file-sharing application designed for direct, end-to-end encrypted file transfers without central servers or user accounts.

💻 Tech Stack & Architecture

Since this is an Electron subreddit, here is a breakdown of how the project is structured:

P2P Core (`@mesh/core`): A standalone, platform-agnostic P2P engine written in pure Node.js running directly inside the Electron **Main Process**. It handles Hyperswarm discovery, `@hyperswarm/secret-stream` E2E encryption, `corestore` replication, and HMAC-SHA256 challenge UI / Renderer:** React 19 + Vite + Tailwind CSS + Lucide icons.

IPC Bridge: Safe contextBridge IPC pattern (`window.bridge`) forwarding engine events (pairing states, transfer progress, peer diagnostics) from Main to Renderer.

Packaging & Auto-Updates:** Configured with `electron-builder` (NSIS assisted installer + standalone portable single-file `.exe`) and integrated with `electron-updater` for differential updates.

CI/CD:Multi-platform matrix build pipeline on GitHub Actions (`windows-latest`, `macos-latest`, `ubuntu-latest`).

⚡ Main Features

  1. One-Time DROP Codes:** Quick 6-digit challenge code pairing for fast, ad-hoc file transfers between untrusted or guest devices.

  2. Trusted Peer Pairing:** Persistent zero-trust authorization to pair your own devices securely.

  3. Portable & Installer Builds: Option for single-file portable `.exe` (runs without installation) or per-user NSIS installer.

  4. Zero Cloud / Zero Account: No registration, no tracking, no central storage

📦 Links & Testers Needed

I just published **v1.0.0-beta.1** and would love to get feedback on the Electron architecture, IPC design, and P2P performance across different networks!

MeshDrop – Zero-cloud, open-source P2P file sharing desktop app

Hello EveryOne!

I built MeshDrop, an open-source, zero-cloud P2P desktop file-sharing application designed for fast, direct, end-to-end encrypted transfers between devices without middleman servers or accounts.

Key Highlights:

• Zero Cloud Dependency: Built on top of the Hyperswarm / Holepunch P2P stack (@hyperswarm/secret-stream, hypercore, corestore).

• One-Time DROP Codes: Quick 6-digit challenge MAC code pairing for ad-hoc file transfers between untrusted or guest devices.

• Persistent Peer Pairing: Zero-trust pairing challenge flow to establish persistent trusted relationships between your own devices.

• Multi-Platform: Windows (installer + single-file portable exe), macOS (.dmg), and Linux (.AppImage).

• Auto-Updates & Standalone Engine: Standalone platform-agnostic P2P core module running in Electron main.

I'd love to get feedback from the community on architecture, P2P NAT traversal performance, and UI/UX. Looking for beta testers as well!

I’ve been working on an open-source P2P file sharing app called MeshDrop (early beta, looking for honest feedback)

ver the past few months, I’ve been working on a project called MeshDrop. I basically wanted a simple way to send files and folders directly between my devices (and with friends) without having to upload everything to cloud storage or deal with third-party servers.

Under the hood, it uses Pear Runtime, Bare JS, and Hyperswarm. Devices connect directly over local LAN or over the internet using DHT holepunching with end-to-end encryption. I also added a few extra features like 8-character short pairing codes and cross-device clipboard sharing.

To be completely transparent, I used AI coding tools to help me build and refine parts of this project since I'm still learning a lot as I go.

Just a fair warning: this is a very early beta. There are definitely rough edges, UI quirks, and things that are still work in progress (like the WebDAV drive mounting feature which is still pretty experimental).

I'm sharing it here because I genuinely want to get constructive feedback from real people to help make it better. If you have some time to check it out, I'd really appreciate your thoughts on:

  • Anything in the workflow or UI that feels confusing or clunky
  • Any bugs or weird connection issues you run into
  • Features that feel missing or things that would make it more useful for you
  • Any bad design or UX decisions I made without realizing it

Please feel free to be completely honest with your feedback. Any constructive critique, bug report, or idea is super helpful.

If you want to try it out or look at the code, here is the GitHub repo:

Thanks for reading, and I'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!

Qatar work visa for Pakistani nationals — are company-sponsored visas currently delayed or on hold?

I’m a Pakistani applicant waiting for a Qatar company-sponsored work visa. My online visa inquiry shows:

  • Nationality: Pakistan
  • Visa Validity: 2026-07-25
  • Visa Status: Under Process

I’m trying to understand whether this is just a normal processing delay or if there is currently a broader delay/hold for Pakistani nationals on company-sponsored work visas in Qatar as it is more then 3 waeks now.

Has anyone recently:

  • Gotten a Qatar work visa approved as a Pakistani national?
  • Seen their visa stuck in “Under Process” for a long time?
  • Heard of company-sponsored visas being delayed or paused for Pakistanis?

Any recent personal experience or updates would be really helpful. Thanks in advance.
