Why were 'Big Head' modes a thing, and where are they now?

I remember, especially during the PSX era, Big Head modes were a thing. Tekken 2, Spider-Man, Tony Hawks etc.
Are there any newer games that feature Big Head modes? Last one I played with a Big Head mode was Rise of the Tomb Raider.
