I am done with Playstation.
One of my happiest memories as a kid is waking up early one weekend morning and going into my aunt's living room to discover I could play this grey playstation box on my own without any supervision.
I played Spyro The Dragon that morning on that grey Playstation 1. I still remember how green the grass looked on that big ginormous CRT television. I also remember switching the discs and playing Crash Bandicoot Warped. I remember the jet ski level. The blue water was more blue than the sky outside in Jumeirah.
I remember the 899 AED ads in Khaleej Times for Playstation 2. I remember the 7th or 8th floor in the Bur Dubai Jumbo where kids used to go to play Tekken 5 and Gran Turismo on the Playstation consoles on display there.
I remember getting a PSP from Sheba electronics and my first UMD was Tony Hawks Underground 2 Remix.
I remember the fat piano black 80 GB PS3 I got for getting good grades in the 8th grade and how I played Metal Gear Solid 4 over a 100 times on that console.
I remember buying a PS4 Pro with my first job salary raise. The first game I bought was Crash Bandicoot N.Sane Trilogy.
And I remember how excited I was a few years ago when I grabed a PS5 disc edition at launch for 2099 from Amazon.
I have always been a Playstation boy. I grew up into a Playstation man. But given how Sony has recently changed, I don't think I want to give this company any of my money again.
I don't agree with paying for online. It doesn't make any sense to me. I don't feel any difference in multiplayer quality from when PSN was free on PS3 to now when it is a paid subscription.
The prices of games on PSN, even though I'm in a safe position to be able to afford them, honestly make me feel stupid. I don't want to feel like I'm stupid every time I pay for a game.
Even on discount, these games cost way more than they should. Way more than they do on in disc form from Amazon or even Steam.
And now, there's dynamic pricing. When I heard about that my stomach turned. I don't think it is fair to charge different people different rates for games. It feels instinctually shady and wrong.
And now, their decision to discontinue discs. It's the last straw for me.
Every game that has mattered to me I have bought it on disc. Because seeing them, holding them, feels different. Having that physical copy feels like I used the money that I work super hard for, for something real.
I cannot, I really cannot, without feeling like I'm getting taken advantage of for loyalty, continue supporting this company.
The only thing I'm going to give playstation money for between now and January 2028 is a physical copy of Resident Evil Veronica.
I'm starting a mini PC fund from this month. I'd rather save a small piece of my salary every month and buy / build a great PC in Jan 2028 than continue supporting Playstation.
On the PC, I can own my games via Good old Games. Steam sales are incredible value for money. And whatever launches on PC has some degree of preservation potential due to emulation.
With Playstation, I can't say the same.
I am done with Playstation. And sadly so. I wish I could have another story of how I bought myself a PS6. But that's not going to happen.
