Date night ideas?

My husband and I have our third anniversary coming up. We just went thru hell moving back to Virginia, and we’re hoping to just grab a great dinner next week. We’re pretty open to most cuisines. Though, if it’s seafood, we’ll need a solid steak/pork/chicken dish as he is not a fish fan.

We are unfamiliar with this part of the south side. I used to live on the peninsula, and he lived in Norfolk. But Chesapeake is a mystery to us. Any good places ya’ll recommend?

Edit: Thank you all so much for the recommendations! I’ll have my husband take a look and let ya’ll know what we decide. 😁

Need housing ASAP, please

Need housing ASAP

Hi there. My husband is navy, and we’re moving to Norfolk at the end of this week. We arrive on August 7th. We had a home we were going to rent, but the brokerage company lied to us and the homeowner. The homeowner broke their contract. We had signed a year lease and paid deposits. The lease is voided since the homeowner parted with the brokerage company. Now we are without a home and leaving in two days. My family is me, my husband, and my mom. We have four pets (two cats, two dogs). We have applied for various rentals but haven’t heard back. Please. Does anyone know of anything that accepts pets and is available now?

Edit: Thank you all so much for the replies. I cannot begin to say how much I appreciate it. While some of it is stuff I’ve looked into already, it’s nice to know there is a community willing to help find resources. Plus, maybe it’ll help the next poor soul this happens to! I have a few ideas, and am in touch with a couple of people. I am a total wreck still, but very thankful for the help. Again, thank you all so very much for the kind words and resources. 💕

The oddest things can trigger our traumatic memories

It’s amazing what can trigger our most horrific memories. Things we’d forgotten. Things we never realized were as severe as they truly were.

While watching the new Lord of the Flies adaptation, a scene triggered a long forgotten incident. I told my husband about it.

A childhood “friend” and I were walking to school. This was in elementary school. He and I were thick as thieves, until he became friends with boys, particularly little bullies. While on our walk to the school one morning, he picked up a very large rock, one nearly half the size of my Jansport backpack. He threw it at me, and it hit my upper back. When I started crying and asked why he threw a rock at my back, he replied, “I was aiming for your head.”

Sometimes I am horrified by the amount of incidents like this my brain has had to hide. It’s a trauma response, I know. But it just crushes me that not only did it happen, but events like this were common enough that my brain had to resort to blocking them out. And to be honest, I can probably tell you why I told no one. I’d already asked a “trusted” adult at my advanced school for help with another bully. Their response was that since the other bully was holding me down and rubbing dirt in my hair at the pick up school, not the advanced school, there was nothing she could do. My trust in adults vanished. Why would I tell them a boy tried to kill me if they’ll just ignore me again?

Of course, as a child, I didn’t know what could have happened. That I could have died if he’d had better aim.

I just needed to get this off my chest. The little girl I was never had a chance.

My heart broke today. Two nights ago, we had to take Bucky to an emergency vet due to prolonged seizures. While there, they discovered an emerging issue with his gallbladder, on top of his existing epilepsy and heart murmurs. We opted to take him home yesterday morning, and brought him to his regular vet for a second opinion. It didn’t look good. They asked us to bring him in today for further imaging and blood work.

I spent all of yesterday with my best friend. I cuddled beside him, and fed him roasted chicken and applesauce. He could stand, but barely. He was quite dazed. He had another seizure last night, and still could not walk this morning when we bought him to the vet.

This afternoon, I received a call saying he had no improvement, and they confirmed the gallbladder issue as well as nodules in his liver. He also had not been able to evacuate his bladder or bowels on his own.

With my mom and husband by my side, I made the gut-wrenching decision to say goodbye to my best friend. Bucky was a constant in my life that helped me get out of bed every morning. He was the best dog, the best friend. He was my soul-dog. He was by my side for several moves, and helped me piece my life together after a robbery during a cross country move in 2023. The thought of him not jumping on my bed tomorrow morning is haunting.

I fully believe his predecessor, Lucy, chose him for me. The day she passed almost ten years ago, we came across Bucky’s photo. Fate brought that amazingly smart and sassy boy into my life. His first night home, he played fetch and tug-of-war. He collected lovies like it was going out of style. He adored his feline siblings, and was protective of his baby canine sister. They all know something has shifted. Archie, the orange cat, knew this morning when he decided to cuddle with Bucky out of the blue.

I know I made the right choice. I know he is in superb company on Rainbow Bridge. But I will miss my baby boy, my Bucky Barnes, so deeply. I feel ill. I want my little man back in my arms.

Until we meet again, my sweet, sweet boy.
