Local healthcare system - union?

I'm trying to get a sense of how nurses in the area feel about unionizing before I potentially put my own job at risk.

For some background, my previous employer was unionized, and I genuinely had a great experience. Our union advocated for safe staffing ratios, patient safety, fair working conditions, and the physical and mental well-being of staff. I know unions can be a divisive topic around here, but I wanted to put some feelers out before considering reaching out to one.

I've been working for the major healthcare system in the Hampton Roads area for about six months. I'm an experienced nurse, but what I've seen and heard during that time has honestly been alarming. Chronic understaffing is creating serious patient safety concerns. Management refuses to hire enough staff or provide safe nurse-to-patient ratios. Nurses in the emergency department are being assigned six patients. I've also heard of nurses being disciplined or fired for refusing to float to units where they believed the assignments were unsafe. Unfortunately, that's only part of the problem.

On top of that, this is the lowest-paying healthcare system in the area, and from what I understand, raises have been limited to around 2% for years.

I know not everyone shares the same views on unions, and I'm not looking to start an argument. I'm simply trying to understand whether other nurses feel the same way and whether organizing would be worth pursuing. I'd appreciate hearing your honest thoughts and experiences.

Quick question (and I greatly appreciate answers because I can't seem to get a clear, direct, answer anywhere): what EXACTLY is being built.....

(1.) Right next to the Nissan on Battlefield Blvd?

(2.) Where the old Dirty Buffalo is in the Grassfield area?

(3.) Where the old TGI Fridays is? (The exact spot)

(4.) The blank area across the street from First Watch? (Thought it was gonna be a Mitsubishi plant at first)

(5.) The area next to the Popeyes's near Debaun Loop?

(6.) The spot area near, TGI Fridays, but across from the new Hyatt on the other side of the street? (Not #3, there's an area with terracotta beams I keep seeing near TGI Fridays)

An interview with Nila Devanath, candidate for CD2 in Virginia.

VA-02 deserves representation that puts people over corporate PACs. Check out Dr. Nila Devanath's latest interview on "A Quiet Rage" podcast!

/keithprivette - part of the campaign staff for Nila for Congress

Our campaign just wrapped up a fantastic, in-depth interview on the A Quiet Rage podcast, and we wanted to share it directly with the Reddit community. If you live in Hampton Roads or Virginia's 2nd Congressional District, this is a crucial primary election. We want to make sure you know exactly who is on the ballot and what they are fighting for.

📺 Watch the full interview here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7TjNv5hbVg

TL;DW – Here is a breakdown of the key issues Dr. Nila discussed:

  • 🏥 Fixing Our Broken Healthcare System: As an acute care hospital physician right here in Hampton Roads, Dr. Nila sees the devastating effects of our system daily. She shared the heartbreaking reality of our veterans facing preventable amputations simply because they are forced to wait up to 9 months for a VA appointment. She is actively fighting for Universal Healthcare and Medicare for All to end this "wartime medicine" in our own communities.
  • 💵 Immediate Economic Relief: Working families are being squeezed by the cost of living. To provide immediate relief, Nila strongly supports the Working Americans Tax Cut Act, which would eliminate federal income tax for individuals making around the national cost of living ($45k-$50k/year), while we work on long-term plans to make billionaires pay their fair share to fund domestic programs.
  • 🛑 Ending Congressional Corruption: Nila refuses to take a single dime of Corporate PAC or AIPAC money. She strongly advocates for a complete ban on individual stock trading for members of Congress and supports term limits so politicians don't get entrenched at the expense of everyday working people.
  • 🕊️ Foreign Policy & Keeping Troops Safe: With a heavy military presence in VA-02, Nila emphasized the importance of not sending our active-duty service members into unauthorized, endless wars driven by corporate or foreign interests.
  • ✊🏽 Breaking Historic Barriers: For 237 years, VA-02 has never been represented by a person of color. Dr. Nila is stepping up to ensure that Congress actually reflects the diverse communities it serves and brings a desperately needed working-class, healthcare-focused perspective to the table.

How You Can Help Us Flip VA-02: This movement is 100% grassroots-powered. We don't have the backing of the corporate establishment, which means we rely entirely on voters like you to spread the word.

🗳️ EARLY VOTING IS OPEN! The primary election is on August 4th, but early voting is officially open right now through August 1st. With ongoing attacks on the postal service, we are highly encouraging everyone to skip the lines and bank your vote early!

Get Involved Today:

We would love to hear your thoughts on the interview—drop any questions you have for Dr. Nila down in the comments! 🌊🎒

Western Branch South

I’m looking for a house In Chesapeake because I’m relocating for work. Someone at work recommended Western Branch South, but I’ve read mixed things online about crime and the overall desirability of this area. I’ve found a house there that I like, and it’s in a beautiful neighborhood, but it’s adjacent to a rather ugly warehouse/business district and it’s only 2 miles from Portsmouth, and I’ve been told to stay as far away from Portsmouth as possible because of crime. Can anyone give me any insight? Western Branch South, good or bad?

Question on Teaching?

I’m exploring a career change into teaching in Hampton Roads and would appreciate some honest feedback.

I recently finished a 27-year career in telecom leadership and learning & development, where I led training teams, designed curriculum, and delivered leadership development programs. I also have a Master’s in Education, though my focus was adult learning rather than K-12.

Are schools in Hampton Roads actually hiring for Social Studies, History, or Business teachers? Would a district realistically hire someone on a provisional license while I complete the required certifications and endorsements?

I’d love to hear from current teachers, administrators, or anyone who has made a similar transition into education. Thanks!

Random Question—pond stone for landscaping

We’re looking to do some updating of our backyard flower beds and there at times is considerable rain so it flushes out all the mulch. Wondering if anyone knows of a good place to buy pond stone. We’ve looked at Home Depot and the option wasn’t amazing. We looked at Site One on Centerville and again only one option and not amazing. Anyone know a spot here or within 45 minutes (so NC like moyock, Va beach, Norfolk or Suffolk would work)?

Hair Stylist Suggestions/Recommendations

Hi all!

I just moved to the area from NJ. I’m looking for a hair stylist in the hampton roads area. I’m living in Suffolk but willing to drive if I can find someone.

I’m specifically looking for someone who specializes in dry cuts. I know it’s a more niche technique, but I started getting them done in Jersey and fell in love. I work in health care and hardly do my hair so I want it to look good in its natural state. When I get a standard cut, I always end up with random uneven pieces bc my hair is textured and I don’t blow dry it.

I’d love any recommendations!! T

Livestream Lecture about Blue Catfish & the Health of the Bay

🐟 PSA for anyone who cares about the Chesapeake Bay: there's a silent threat lurking below the surface.

The Blue Catfish was introduced to Virginia rivers in the 1970s as a sport fish. Nobody told it to stay put. It's now found in nearly every tidal river in Maryland, it can live 20+ years, grow to over 100 lbs, and eat basically everything in sight — blue crab, menhaden, American eel, you name it. Watermen are noticing. Scientists are alarmed. And the Bay's ecosystem is under real pressure.

On June 25 in Easton, MD, Lectures on the Shore is hosting an evening with two people who are doing something about it:

🔬 Dr. Noah Bressman — marine biologist at Salisbury University, researches invasive species in the Bay, works with MD DNR and USGS
🦞 Nick Hargrove — waterman from Tilghman Island who built a seafood processing plant specifically to catch, process, and sell blue catfish commercially. He literally got a Congressional Record Citation for it in 2024.

The idea: if you can create a market for the fish, watermen have an incentive to pull them out of the Bay. It's not a perfect solution, but it's a real one — and it's working.

Reception with speakers at 5:30 p.m. ($60) | Program 6:30–8:00 p.m. ($40) | Livestream also available if you're not local

📍 Temple B'Nai Israel, 7199 Tristan Drive, Easton, MD

Questions? Reach out to info@chesapeakeforum.org. This one's worth the drive (or the stream)!

A call for volunteers to phone bank and canvassing for Nila Devanath for VA 02

I am with Dr. Nila Devanath's campaign team. Since Virginia Beach community won't let us post to their community, because this is a federal race and not local enough.....I am coming to this very generous community

Our campaign is powered by you! 📱🚪 We are building a true grassroots movement across VA-02, and we need your help to spread Nila’s message to every neighbor.

We are currently recruiting volunteers for two critical roles:

📱 Phone Bankers: Connect with voters from the comfort of your home or our campaign office. No experience necessary—training is provided! Help us reach more voters quickly.

🚪 Canvassers: Join our weekend launch teams to knock on doors and have meaningful, face-to-face conversations in our communities. Bring a friend and make an impact!

Every call and every door knock gets us closer to victory in November. Whether you have 2 hours a week or 10, your time makes a difference.

Ready to help us win? 🌟
