Google launches Nano Banana 2 Lite — faster and cheaper image generation via Gemini API

Google has released Nano Banana 2 Lite, a lower-latency image generation model aimed at high-volume workflows.

Key points:

  • Generates images in around 4 seconds.
  • Costs about $0.034 per image.
  • Available through Google AI Studio, Gemini API, and Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform.
  • Replaces the original Nano Banana, which Google now treats as the legacy model.
  • Seems positioned more for rapid creative iteration than high-end image quality.

The interesting part to me is the pricing. At that cost, this starts to look useful for apps that need lots of draft images, thumbnails, ad variants, or product mockups.

Curious if anyone here is actually using Gemini image generation in production yet.

Perisher still has no snow today

Only the Magic Carpet area and a short TBAR are open, plus it's raining - not recommended to come this week

Any good parks around Sydney where charcoal BBQs are actually allowed?

I’m trying to put together a list for family weekend trips, but I found most places only mention electric BBQs (or don’t make it clear at all).

I’m specifically looking for parks where you can legally use a portable charcoal BBQ, ideally with things like:

  • Picnic tables
  • Toilets
  • Kids playground
  • Plenty of space

Does anyone have favourites they’d recommend?

I’ve been collecting the information here as well, since it was surprisingly hard to find in one place:

OpenAI has reportedly delayed the GPT-5.6 after the White House raised safety concerns.

Highlights

  • GPT-5.6 won’t immediately roll out publicly.
  • Initial access is reportedly limited to selected partners.
  • The delay is tied to additional safety evaluation.
  • It raises questions about how governments may influence frontier AI releases.

I’m curious where people draw the line here.

Should governments have a say before frontier models are released?

Google adds computer use capabilities to Gemini 3.5 Flash

Google has introduced computer use for Gemini 3.5 Flash, allowing the model to interact with browsers and desktop applications through the Gemini API.

Key highlights:

  • Browser and desktop interaction support.
  • Built for multi-step automation workflows.
  • Available through the Gemini API.
  • Includes confirmation prompts and safeguards for sensitive actions.

One interesting aspect is that Google is bringing this to the lightweight Flash model rather than limiting it to a flagship model. It’ll be interesting to see how it compares with Claude’s Computer Use for real-world automation tasks.

I also put together a short breakdown with the original source and key takeaways if anyone wants a quick overview:

What do you think? Is Gemini’s approach enough to compete with Claude Computer Use?

Jevris Bay camping and fishing

Booderee National Park I went there recently - it's really a great spot for fishing, especially lots of squid

Planning camping trips in Australia feels unnecessarily complicated

Maybe it's just me, but every time I try to organise a camping weekend I end up using:

  • Google Maps
  • NPWS websites
  • campground websites
  • weather apps
  • random blogs
  • notes in my phone

Just to answer questions like:

  • where should we go?
  • does it have toilets or BBQs?
  • what's nearby?
  • what should we bring?
  • what's the weather likely to be?

I got frustrated enough that I started building a tool for myself that combines trip planning, campground discovery, checklists and weather in one place.

I'm curious:

How do you currently plan camping trips?

What tools or websites do you rely on?

And what is the most annoying part of the process?
