Sneaky bastards

Sneaky bastards

Slightly angling the camera up so people can’t see the line and have to come up and see for themselves. As if vail doesn’t have enough money. Genuinely infuriating

My partner posted here a few months back asking for recommendations on spots to propose to me. Here is the outcome! :-)

Lake mountain without snow gear?

How bad an idea is this?

We’re headed to Marysville next week for a few days, absolutely not intended to be a snow trip, but we do own a toboggan, and I was thinking given the poor season start, it might be reasonable to just go in jeans, jumpers and rain jackets for a day of fun. If it’s just ride down the slope, then walk up a grassy/muddy hill, presumably it won’t be too bad?

Or am I an idiot and we’ll all be soaked and miserable in 30 seconds?

Obviously wouldn’t bother if it’s raining or snowing.

TIA

First trip

Heading up to the snow (Buller) next Friday and Saturday for the first time ever. I'm driving from the south east. Booked a hotel in Mansfield overnight. I'm a bit worried as I've never driven on snow, and no idea about how to put on snowchains. Is there a shuttle that would go from Mansfield to Bulla and back instead that is a better option?

I haven't skiied in years (did a school trip 30 years ago) and never had to organise anything myself. Any advice would be greatly appreciated please! Starting to feel like I might have bitten off more than I can chew!

Will there still be snow mid-August?

This might be a stupid question, but I have never been to the snow, and I was thinking of treating myself and my mother to a weekend trip on her birthday.  So I was wondering if for example, a place like Mt Buller would still be operational that time of year?

Potential follow up snowfall next weekend

As expected, about 30cm of snow fell on the major resorts over the last 2 days, with some really good snowmaking conditions likely this week.

However, it is looking possible that next weekend we may see a very timely, and welcome follow-up system. Still early days, but the models are trending positively.

Snow for kids

Hi all, ski field novice here. Planning to stay in Cooma late July and head to show the kids some snow, possibly a kids skiing lesson at most. To be honest we would be happy with just some tobogganing and having a bit of a play. Would people suggest this is a Selwyn situation? Are Thredbo and Perisher a bit of a waste of time for such a minimal ski experience? Thank you!

Thredbo

Hi guys, just wondering if anyone had any intel on whether Thredbo may open a decent number of runs tomorrow given the recent falls? Trying to avoid a long drive for Friday Flat

How are resorts dealing with the slow start?

Just wondering if anyone has intel on how resorts like Falls and Buller are handling this. Are they panicking and buying snow guns, or are they coming up with deals, or trying to survive?

I’ve seen some pretty crazy propaganda on their instas.

Also is the phrase slow start accurate ? Say, if we’re going in early September, will the snow be the same as an average season in September, as the phrase only implies irregularity in the timing of the early months of the season. Obviously you can’t be certain with predictions- just wondering if people using the phrase slow start tend to mean only the start is affected.

First time driving to Perisher – advice for driving in snow and things to do?

I'm planning my first trip to Perisher and it will also be my first time driving in snowy conditions. I'll be driving from canberra, and I'd really appreciate any advice from people who have done this before.

Also, apart from skiing and snowboarding, what are some fun activities to do in Perisher this time of year?

Is this the dump we're expecting? Is it the official start?

Please dont tell me there'll be rain to wash it away in the next days. Is this all just from snow guns, or actual snowfall? It's giving me hope 🥹

Car Camping Buller/Mansfield

Hi all,

Just wondering if anybody has any spots where they camp in mansfield? I like to drive down for dinner most of the time and sometimes don’t want to drive back to the camp sites near sawmill.

Do police bother you if you park somewhere on the street?

Cheers

Best lift in Australia?

What is the best lift in Australia based on the terrain that one single lift opens up?

Use whatever criteria you deem appropriate.

My vote is Heavenly Valley at Hotham.

It opens up so much terrain. Intermediate and advanced. Below the tree line so you’ve got good visibility most of the time.

I actually think it stands head and shoulder above everything else but if I was pushed, I’d probably include in a top 3:

2 - Kosciusko Express / Thredbo
3 - Blue Ribbon / Hotham

With apologies to Bull Run chair at Buller and International at Falls.

What’s your number 1 lift and why?

Sunday Ski Touring

For those that head out into the backcountry, I'm thinking of heading up for a few days to Twynam way and seeing what the touring conditions are like.

And guru's from previous seasons have any guesses if it's worth it? Happy to hike our way up to the snow line, just want to know if anything around Club/Blue Lake actually skis.

Thanks!
