JF Rey 3056 in orange tint, brown photochromic and blue flash

Made this pair for a friend as a gift. I love the sledge series by JF Rey, decided to get him this orange and titanium frame and fitted it with 40% orange tint, 85% brown photochromic and a blue flash to set it off. Think it turned out wonderfully and think he’ll love it!

Reykjavik Eyes Larus: Daily computer glasses

Think Larus is a very under the radar design by RE, a classic silhouette with these wonderful wing tipped temple edges.

Lens: Trivex material, Shamir’s “relax” with boost for computer use. 20% yellow tint with sapphire flash and backside A/R.

My optician recommended this lens over the Zeiss and decided to order the Zeiss for me (at his cost) with smart life so I could compare and see for myself which one is better.

Don’t know any other optician that would be that hardcore in standing by their opinion 😂 Zeiss lenses come in a few days, I’ll review the two for yall.

When the sunlight hits JMM Muhammad Ali Louisville in Zoltar

Exquisite pair, blew through all my expectations and i'm so happy with this purchase. The color, the silhouette, the fit, the packaging, just 10/10. Glad I pulled the trigger and added this piece to my collection, its a shape I don't have yet.

After 3 weeks of use, I can't recommend these Matsuda frames anymore.

I travelled a day in NYC with these in the Matsuda case in my backpack and when I opened it I noticed the other pince nez screw came off and the whole piece fell out with it. These frames arrived with an already dysfunctional pince nez right out of the box. They literally either sit on my face while I work, a tray or a hard case.

I thought Matsuda was supposed to be this legendary, God-tier brand. I am sorry to say, it's a load of BS. As beautiful as these frames are, this is an unacceptable level of user experience given the price and brand cache that's being peddled.

I’m exceedingly lucky the loose screw didn’t roll around in the case and scratch my lens.

Spectacle Factory is already getting me a new frame because the original pince nez wasn't working properly, but now I am of two minds to return the frame entirely and get a full refund or exchange for something else. This is too much frou frou for something that's meant to be a high quality daily pair I can use.

🚨 Need Help: I'm confounded on a tint pairing for this Ahlem Voltaire

Added a few options... I was looking into adaptive sun so i can somewhat use this indoors but full coverage outdoors. I love the rimless feel of this lens btw, extremely under appreciated in the Ahlem collection, I think the right tint sets this OFF!

But please help me design this, what tint should I bring to AI to try? Looking to make a decision in 2-3 days.

Close up: McLaren MLMG-86S03 Matte Black

A classic Round-Panto silhouette reimagined with a high-set bridge and sharper architectural intent. It captures the bespoke character of vintage handmade frames while delivering the precision, balance, and technical refinement expected from McLaren engineering.

Crafted from 3D-printed titanium, the front is both lightweight and remarkably durable, with a distinctive micro-textured finish

I wear this when riding my bike, or playing basktball, the ribber grips keep this pair in place as I run around. Looking through the lens most gives the landscape a blue/violet hue but I love the ruby/gold flash on the front of the lens it really sets this piece off!

My daily driver: JMM Dealan in Etna

It's a wonderful frame, have considered converting to sunglasses but i enjoy wearing it for 8-10 hours a day and don't want to give it photofusion lenses. If yall have this pair or a JMM pair in Etna and have done something nice with tints, lmk

JMM Haider Ackermann "Melchior" Leather edition: Close up

It's unlike any other piece in my collection, I really want to see into the acetate under the leather to get a sense if there's something special awaiting me there, will prob need to wait 15 years or so for the leather to wear down, but then it'll be like a whole new pair of glasses lol.

It's a nice piece with a distinctly different feel in the hand and on the face due to the leather. I didn't like the purely acetate version of this, took a flier on the leather. The temple embellishment entirely makes this piece, without it it's a pretty bland design imo. But with it, **chef's kiss**

Biggest complaint is the tint on this is so dark that wearing it on anything other than an extremely sunny day would feel dangerous.

When sunlight hits the Matsuda M3129

Lens + tint detail (very subtle)

Black 20% full lens wash

Ruby flash

Zeiss Smartlife

Unfortunately need to return this pair and get a new one from SF, the right pince nez is defective. But a beautiful frame with a nice subtle tint/flash pairing.

This guy is the best optician/eyewear consultant in the DMV, and one of the best in the States and its insane to me that...

...he doesn't put out content on YT. Are y'all as hungry as I am for a Anthony Bourdain-type in eyewear youtube? He has like 8,000 pairs of glasses, an epic boutique in the DMV, over 30 years of eyeglass war stories, a classic "Everybody loves Raymond" vibe with his staff... SO MUCH CONTENT POTENTIAL.

I find the eyewear content space so flat and boring, SF is the only thing that stands out but Rob is more of an "MKBHD of eyewear" persona in a world that can seriously use an "Anthony Bourdain" type.

Looking through Masunaga Taka black with gunmetal titanium (stock tint)

Couldn’t find good examples before I bought a pair for myself, thought I’d share in case anyone else is looking at this pair. Overall impression, stock tint is brilliant, it’s mostly a reddish hued brown and the tinge of yellow toward bottom is extremely subtle. Rest of the frame is a 10/10 (this is my first masunaga, was hard to appreciate what the quality would be, im picky with quality and genuinely zero complaints on frame).

Their packaging was quite meh, so you know their entire budget went to making the glasses as good as possible 😅

JMM Oatman in 60% forest green gradient on face

Beautiful frame but my honest take is it’s painful to wear for long periods. The titanium is wired super tight you basically need to mangle the temples a bit to get relief. Still love this frame, very easy to look through.

Lucas De Stael Zeppelin 04 / Quartz + Chocolate: First time on face

Rob over at Spectacle Factory picked a spectacular frame for me, this is the Zeppelin series from LDS. Rob designed this with a photofusion x flash blue/jade.

I'm on the fence about how the blue looks OFF my face but on the face, and through the eyes, its a terrific color pairing. Notice how subtle the blue looks when its on my face compared to off. The blue off my face feels a bit sporty and less luxurious imo. Any thoughts on this?

I'll take close ups of textures etc in a diff post but extremely stoked with how this feels on face!

Teach a man to yearn for the sea: Spectacle Factory taught me to love eyewear but is it worth the $$$ and time?

Out the gate I want to say that after a lifetime of buying cheap glasses to get a look, I ran into SF's youtube channel and found a whole new love for well made eyewear.

Rob is a wonderful presenter and has great taste. With every video I watched, I fell in love with new brands, new looks, new possibilities for myself even.

I've binged most of his content at this point, and a few videos more than once or twice because I feel like he delivers the goods, so to speak. Deep dives on brands, lenses, pairings of tints versus type of glasses, what type of glasses to wear during which occasion.

After a few weeks of binging I decided to book time with him... it took 3 weeks of waiting to get on his calendar which is fine. My call with him felt genuine, he took the time to understand my lifestyle and came back to me on the same call with 3 picks for me, he likes to keep selections small to lower cognitive load and I think this is good because it shows he has judgement. I ended up buying 2 of the 3 and paid over $3000 for them on the spot.

To be clear I haven't received my glasses yet, they come in about 5 days, so TBD on quality of output though im sure that won't be an issue. The issue is everything in between tbh. If you're planning to use SF's services, a few things you should plan for or keep in mind:

  1. He's a good salesman on the call, you will want what he shows you. It's probably best not to immediately buy, sit with the choices for a few days and make sure you really love the picks. Unfortunately, I was sold on SF before the call so I moved really fast here. The downstream impact of this is after paying, I wanted to change the lens tint on one of my glasses which prompted me to reach out to Rob over email. It has been 3 weeks and he still hasn't responded to this request. It somewhat felt to me that after the sale was done, he moved on to the next. This is not the impression he gives on his videos where he describes going back and forth with his customers to make sure they're happy with the decision. Maybe im an outlier, maybe my email got lost... or maybe he's optimizing for the sale and his own time being better spent on the next one. I don't actually know, but you should know this is an issue.
  2. On your call with Rob the video quality will be poor and you won't be able to see the details of the glasses. Make sure you ask him to send you photos and videos of closeups so you know exactly what you're buying. If he points you to whatsapp, ask his team to do the same.
  3. Assume communications with the team will be tough, they're not fast, they give incomplete answers that don't inspire confidence like "it's in process" and "we will try" and "it's in final stages" (but no timeline). I made a point to call their store from the U.S. to talk to a human and verify info on shipping timeline and process. I'd recommend you do the same.
  4. Rob told me the order would take about 3 weeks, he was pretty much on the money there, it took about 3 weeks. I've seen comments where people have waiting months, this was not my experience.
  5. I specifically asked them to send me photos and videos of the finished glasses so I could approve them before they ship it to the U.S. — they confirmed over whatsapp that they would, then when I got a shipping notification the team told me that they weren't informed about sending me pics beforehand. The problem is if im unhappy im going to have to ship them back, get them fixed, and pay customs all over again. Sending customers final pics of their products completed should be a basic operating procedure especially given how expensive their glasses and lenses are and the fact that the lenses are custom.

I get my glasses in a few days, i'll report back with pictures of the output. I like Rob's content and his taste, the glasses procurement process leaves significant room for customer experience improvement but im excited to see what they've made for me either way.
