What do you look for in a director?

First time director! Working on a short film that I wrote. I’m super excited but want to make sure I am playing my part in being the best director I can for the actors. Of course I know a lot of it comes down to personal preference but wondering if anyone has general guidance on what they like from their directors.

More into the woods drawings

Shared my drawing of last midnight before. Drew four more scenes from the show. Rapunzel in her tower, the giantess, her death, and the baker with his baby

How do you advertise your film as an indie creator just posting to YouTube?

How do you get the word out, get views, etc, as a filmmaker on YouTube? My channel has attracted views in the past but has been dead for years, I’m trying to get back into it. I only have 60 subs.

Edit: this would also be the first short film on my channel so branding wise, what I have there isn’t exactly “come watch short films here” vibes

Judy Kuhn appreciation

Judy Kuhn, the OBC Cosette (also in the 10th anniversary concert), holy god every time I listen to her I levitate. I’m a gay man and even I can see why Marius would fall in love with her. On top of just sounding beautiful there is such tangible sweetness, innocence, and joy in her voice that I don’t get from other Cosette’s. Just wanted to express my love for her lol

Share your films!

I feel like it would be nice to connect and get to know people’s work more on here, if you have a project you’ve worked on that you’re particularly proud of I thought it might be fun if we shared them with each other! Comment with a link and a log line :) (if they’re public on YT or Vimeo ofc)

Table work expectations?

First time director here. I have been in multiple productions but only two have had any kind of “table work” and both were very different. For my first directing venture I’d like to facilitate table work but am not really sure how to approach it. I have a list of some very basic discussion questions for each actor (what is your objective/why/what is your relationship to the other characters) but not much else.

What do you usually expect in table work exercises? What activities do you get the most out of, and what do you not like?

Is making a 30 minute short a dumb idea

I know that it won’t get into any festivals at that length. I just want to post it online. I’m really passionate about the story I want to tell and a 10-15 minute short just doesn’t feel exciting enough to me. But I always hear from people that making a film between a traditional short length (5-15min) and feature length (40+) is stupid.

I don’t mean to be arrogant but I’m probably going to make it anyway lol, but for future reference, how do you guys typically approach short film length?

How/where to find film composers on no budget?

Making a passion project film. Everyone involved is doing it for the love of it and not for pay. However I don’t know anyone who can score the film. I found one space online but everyone is only doing it for money which is so valid and fair! But unfortunately not what I can do right now. I really don’t want to use stock music.

Is there any way to make this artificial moonlight lighting look less…artificial?

Lighting has always been something I neglected because I’m an idiot, and have only accepted recently I really need to learn how to hone it in. But especially for night shots (and I make a lot of horror) I struggle to figure out how to light a scene without just shining a blue light on the subject and calling it a day. Here I’ve used a cookie to put a false window beam effect over it but that’s all I could think to do to make it a little more textured. The second photo I’ve color graded so the light is a little less of a THICK blue but I’m also color blind so idk how well it worked lol.

If anyone has general lighting tips for night scenes that would be great too!

How important is it to have a production company?

As an indie filmmaker, sometimes when I look at festival submissions or resume examples, people have some sort of production company listed, and when I put a casting call on backstage they also asked for the company. This makes sense for a big shot of course but as an indie filmmaker trying to break into the scene, should I create a brand to put all the films under? Or is it a bad look to make up a company that is pretty much just me anyway making what I can with my camera?

How do I use the cuisinart Toa 26?

The instruction manual says that when you turn the air fry oven dial, the light will turn red and it will turn on. I have done that but nothing has happened.

How to get audition nerves to calm down?

When I ask this advice of actor friends they usually say something along the lines of “just be in the scene” “just think about your character” but I don’t find this helpful at all as someone with an anxiety disorder. Once I’m on the stage I feel pretty comfortable making choices and being in the zone but in auditions I just freeze up and get soooo nervous and uncomfortable, if I could “just focus” I would 😭 to my fellow anxious actors what do you do?

Is going to the club the only place that dc gays in their 20s meet?

I’ve looked into some social groups online and it seems like most of the participants are in their late 30s-40s, which is fine! I’m open to friends of all ages! But ofc I do relate to my own generation most but I never know where to find them besides the club, which I am not a fan of to begin with. How to meet people?

New Les Mis album?

I am so excited. Even though I STRONGLY prefer the original arrangements for the Les Mis score, I’m also someone who likes to have multiple options when listening to shows. And even though I don’t like it as much I still think it’s cool that current productions of Les Mis have different orchestrations. I had always said that we need a proper studio recording of it that isn’t a live album so we can have good recordings of both versions of the show and it finally came out this Friday! Not only that, but at first glance it seems they’ve also included the entire score! So now the complete symphonic recording isn’t the only album to have all the songs.

What are people’s thoughts on the album? I’ve only listen to a tiny bit of it and there are things I like and things I dislike but overall I’m thrilled we have this option.

Joy Franz sings No One is Alone

Joy Franz (the original Stepmother in Into the Woods) covered No One is Alone for Sondheim Unplugged. I like to imagine that just before dying after getting lost on the woods, the stepmother reflected on her treatment of Cinderella and came to terms with how unfair she was/the consequences of her actions. Not sure if Joy imagined that but I definitely do.

My drawing of “Last Midnight”

The idea is that the sprint of her mother comes out from a crack in the ground in the shape of tree branches and drags her down to hell, inspired by the 2010 Central Park staging. Also have her face and hands starting to turn into tree-like claws (“give me claws and a hunch”).
