So i have commented this in a few posts about Adam, but i then thought it’d be just as valid for other characters and then wanted to make it a post of my own simply to see what people think.

Imo villains should get semblance evolutions just like what Ren got, i always like it when villains also use the power system to grow, like mahito (jujutsu kaisen) hitting black flashes on Yuji or Sojo (kagurabachi) bonding with the enchanted blade to make his more lethal just like chihiro does; it makes me feel like the world comes together.
Yes, we don’t have a hard science on how it happens, one could argue it’s simply for the plot if we include a meta reason, but we do know the gyst of it, the user needs to reach a deeper understanding about themselves or fall onto whatever that dark land was in the EV.
So my question is why don’t villains like Adam, Ironwood and cinder get this? They have grown for the worst yes but it’s growth and deeper understanding of themselves. A person doesn’t always grow for the better and not only that, if a semblance is a manifestation of that person’s soul almost a way to tell how that person is like in personality, it’s literally made for them, wouldn’t this negative growth be included in the ways a semblance can evolve?

Adam’s arc is kind of him slowly losing all of the excuses he put up to everyone and maybe himself too and showing that deep down he’s a fucking bastard obsessed over a cat girl. By V6 he doesn’t even hide it under any sort of pretext, he literally tells blake to behave and that she’s his and all that. Shouldn’t accepting this part of himself and focusing entirely on his obsession be a valid route for his semblance to evolve?

Or Ironwood growing to view his emotions as unnecessary as mettle seemingly brainwashes him (i don’t like mettle but CRWBY made it canon so we have to deal with it), eventually coming to believe it himself as it irreparably changed his mind alongside the events of V8. It would make sense for mettle to evolve, tho in this case i could see it because if the semblance is the one doing the work then he never reached it by himself so it’s kind of a “system error” were it just doesn’t happen; or maybe mettle itself could evolve as it reached this conclusion for whats “best” for the user's goals, making it more refined to properly achieve this task.

Or cinder who actually had a scene where she understands that brute forcing her way through things isn’t a guaranteed win and she kinda has to earn things to have them (earning them refering to being able to beat the shit out of the people not letting her have whatever she wants). This is actually perfect to have a semblance evolution, it’d even make a lot of sense since she also has the maiden powers to boost herself so her semblance could evolve even harder than most.

The main thing i use as example of how this would look like in a more practical sense would be something similar to what Jack hanma and Pickle do in baki.
Baki fits weirdly well for this as it’s a series with a lot of schizo mumbo jumbo that works as a soft power system. You can literally become stronger depending on your mentality even if you didn’t train that much before getting the power up.
Jack hanma is a street fighter that trains 30 hours a day and takes a metric ton of drugs per day as well. In his fight with baki in the Max tournament he has an overdose which makes him physically stronger but at the same time poisons him; this leads to his body rejecting the drugs and puking them out, forcing a “refining of the body” which keeps the strength and leaves out the poison.
Pickle is a caveman that was discovered frozen in ice, once he has to fight the resurrected musashi miyamoto he decides to starve himself before the fight; doppo (a top tier martial artists) explains this by saying that hunger is the ultimate defense mechanism as being hungry makes animals more desperate and fight harder

You get what i’m getting at right? This are very toxic ways of treating yourself similar to what ironwood, Adam and cinder do to themselves. It would be a really cool way of getting a power boost and to expand on the world building, we get to see the positive ways a semblance can evolve from rwby’s actions and the negative ways through the villains’s actions.

Edit 2: also i forgot that it’s kind of implied that Qrow’s also evolved in some way, luck manipulation and all that now seems to be able to manipulate who gets the bad luck or if it’s good luck for himself. The whole thing were he holds clover’s amulet and it seems to have a good effect on his luck.

So i know this question has been asked by many but i still don’t get it so i want to see if i can get a good explanation.

So… i don’t like mettle… Let’s get this out of the way…
I hate how over complicated it is and how little it is explained because the show would be far better without it because it kinda just ruins everything in V7-8 unnecessarily.

Mini rant finished. How does it work?

The way i see it, it brain washes ironwood. Since the semblance forces him into a specific train of thought that it makes him almost instantly take the more extreme routes for that. It doesn’t seem like he can break away from that train of thought even if he wants to as the only way to stop it is to make the semblance feel like that objective has been completed.
Since It’s such a minor and non physical semblance to the point there’s not even a signal in the user that it’s triggered, then it’s likely that breaking his aura isn’t enough to stop it from working. Similar to qrow’s.

So, onto my next question. Did anyone know??

Qrow and winter are the closest people to ironwood, ironwood even considers qrow a very close friend and he was genuinely happy to see him, he sees him as such a trust worthy figure that using him as bait didn’t even cross him mind even when in a full mettle state. Then there’s winter who may or may not be a daughter figure to him (maybe some fanon leaking into this sentence). So when they don’t even mention his semblance or even check up on him during a time of very clear mental distress about it then it makes me think no one knows. Probably not even ironwood. The semblance is probably completly undetectable by any means.

Think about it, while ironwood is somewhat mysterious when it comes to people outside his close ones, true, he doesn’t really keep any secret from the people he’s close to. He laid out the plan to rwby as clearly as he could, in no point of V7 did he withhold info from rwby and the others to show himself in an unthreatening light. I think the only lie was the amity arena being ready to launch (which was technically true at that point) to draw out watts, but not much else, everything else came after mettle started working overtime

If ironwood knew then it would make a lot of sense for qrow and winter to know about his semblance too because that’s also a good contingency for it, so it even adds up with his paranoid side as he’s preparing for a factor that’s hard to control. And even if he did lie about it, then Oz would probably know too as he’s connected to all schools and probably to most political entities in remnant, if it’s detectable then there’s no way that a younger ironwood would be able to keep it from them, and would never let anyone into his illuminaty wouldn’t knowing everything about them. So he would tell qrow about it as a contingency, knowing that qrow would empathize with ironwood too and be careful about the subject.

Them not knowing makes a lot of sense to me since winter and qrow would be the kind to check up on him if they knew about the semblance. Qrow can probably relate a lot with the plight of having an uncontrollable semblance, it would be an issue he can help with on a personal level; and winter is winter, she sees him as a father figure if I’m not mistaken.

So I’ve been thinking, since Nicholas gave the company to Jacques instead of willow and Jacques has been protrayed throughout the show as an unskilled idiot who didn’t even have a password in his computer until resently, why did Nicholas give Jacques his company instead of to willow?

Like, Nicholas should be skilled on his own, he made the SDC, so lying to him shouldn’t be easy and Jacques has never been shown as even a skilled business man so there’s no way he actually managed to lie his way there.

Which leaves us with the other two options.

I often see in fics that Jacques comes from the slums of atlas and that he had to fight tooth and nail to survive everyday (i imagine something like the small flashback we got for Hiruhiko in kagurabachi, if you know you know), that’s why when he finally managed to score with the schnees he became the way he is. His worst traits took over and he chose to let it happen as he’s desperate to never go back to that kind of life. I really like this explanation, since it doesn’t justify any of his actions but it does explain them.

The other one is unlikely since he’s depicted as a good man, even called a hero by many… BUT also a bit likely imo. Hear me out.

Nicholas is from a different time, he’s from a more racist time, it’s likely that nicholas had many outdated views on morality. It was stated that things were worse before the radical WF appeared (i wonder if he was during the faunus war too). I always guessed that he was a “good slave owner”, the kind of guy that owns people as property but is “good” to them so it’s “fine”. Maybe nicholas over looked a lot of the racism and near slave working conditions he had planned for the SDC because he simply didn’t think it was so bad as it was common at the time.

It’s also very likely that Nicholas was a bit of a misogynist, i don’t think it’s too big of a stretch to think this, he picked Jacques over willow who would have far better education than him and would know how the SDC works from the inside.

So some context first. In the World of RWBY, the god of darkness is one of the two gods that made the world of remnant, he’s the god of destruction and darkness and apparently gave magic to the first humans.

He then made the grimm, immortal empath creatures that grow stronger and smarter with time and focus entirely on desctruction. And yet despite this, despite the grimm being the absolute best he could ever muster, they are genuinely, aggressively mid at destroying things. They only know how to horde, they don’t make use of their passive telepathy in fights to single out the weak links or trigger grimm hordes, they don’t even seem to get that much better with time, they are the same as they were young but with a bit more bone around their bodies.

Theres a common fan theory that old grimm eventually stop doing anything as they “Wait for the right moment” but they are so powerful they don’t think it’s worth it as everyone is so weak in comparison. I feel this is a cop out For bad writing, but I’ll accept it for this post. This means that the god of darkness, an immortal being like the grimm, genuinely didn’t plan for the grimm to live more than a few hundred years, this means that at his absolute best he doesn’t even plan for basic problems that his creation may encounter.

The prototype of the grimm is even more pathetic, the jabberwalker is so weak that an auraless (force field), armless, breathless yang scared it off. It’s so pathetically weak i genuinely don’t think Jaune got that much stronger when he got stucked in the EV (alt dimension from where the gods come from) because the EV has NOTHING that could even take Vol 2 Jaune to a high diff fight outside of the cat taking over neo.

It’s no wonder he only contributed with destruction and magic when making humans while his brother, the god of light and creation, gave us all the rest, he’s the only one of the two that has genuine talent and at least doesn’t make aggressively mid stuff. I honestly don’t think darkness contributed much to the making of remnant beyond putting the grimm in it and probably making death work, whcih probably was light’s idea since he’s the only one of the two that wants to preserve it. He's an ass tho.

It’s honestly no wonder why everyone prayed to his brother, he’s the least likely to fuck up your prayer. I honestly think their mother prefered light a lot more, he’s basically the better version of darkness, and is seemingly the only one to inherit her artistic talent. He should’ve gone to the tree to try and change himself into something of actual worth, he genuinely fails to meet anything other than the bare minimum expectations you’d have for a god.

I’m mainly speaking of natural grimm, not salem or artificial ones like the hound.

So we know that the older they get the stronger and smarter the grimm get. This sounds dangerous on paper, specially taking into account that the grimm are empaths, animals have basic patern recognition which means that old grimm would eventually know what makes people tick and what to do to better destroy humans. The more time it passes the more they get to see of humans and the more they learn.

You get what i mean right? In theory, an old grimm would not only lead a pack like the elephant from V2 but also know that negative emotions will draw in more Grimm and would seek to trigger this. We also know that old grimm are capable of measuring the pros and cons of a situation and choose not to attack if the cons outweight the pros, so they are capable of hunting tactics and since they are empaths they should also be able to perform terror tactics since it’s a key part of their base abilities as grimm.

In theory, old grimm should be a fucking menace, because they are immortals and lead an army of endless monsters while also literally reading your mind and know who the weakest link in your group is and what makes people in general tick. Basically mini salems but that lack any sort of personality you could manipulate as they are inhuman and they also have some sort of pseudo magic exclusive to them as they can breathe fire and even control minds in some cases.

But at the same time, nothing in the show supports this theory.

The nuckelavee at most switched its fighting style a bit and seems to have a Notion of what a trophy is but not much else, it fights like a regular grimm mostly, doesn’t even try to retreat and switch tactics to anything other than direct combat. Maybe it’s because it was a fusion between two grimm (if I’m not mistaken) and so it wasn’t really old, just powerful. (Tho it didn’t even kill the huntsmen we see on the brink of death if I’m not mistaken, i think it was raven’s gang of bums.)

We have never ever met a grimm quite like the V2 elephant, they have never shown restrain and planning on that level. So either old grimm are really just as weak as the average fodder and they really aren’t anything special since they got one shotted in every horde we saw or we just haven’t seen them yet.

I fear the first one may be the answer, because there’s no reason for a grimm to stop being active. The older they get the stronger and smarter they get, so if anything they should be even harder to deal with and yet nothing in the show tells us that, if anything grimm are always easy to deal with wether they are seasoned veterans or newborns.

You think I’m being too hard on the grimm and that there’s secretly some old grimm that would def wipe the floor with most huntsmen and it’s just happening offscreen where we can’t see them? Or that I just expect too much out of the grimm as an antagonistic force and apocaliptic event and they really just are mindless monsters that never really get better and just flood places with easily one shottable grimm in hopes of overwhelming the people there?
