Could MLB expansion replace one of Florida's largest surface parking lots?
The Orlando Dreamers* recently requested close to $1 billion of Tourist Development Tax (TDT) monies for an enclosed stadium and entertainment district on a site near an interchange with State Road 528 north of SeaWorld's Aquatica Orlando. Other than what appears to be a small retention pond, there is nothing currently on the site.
That said, I think we can do better. Next to the SeaWorld park, there is a very large parking lot off Sea Harbor Drive that is even larger than the proposed stadium site. I would put the stadium site here, while building parking garages for SeaWorld, but still incorporating the new rail access proposed for the Dreamers' park.
The parking needs for both the stadium and SeaWorld are surprisingly complementary, as SeaWorld will be generating traffic in the morning and in the afternoon before the game starts. Non-baseball events may be more challenging in regards to parking, but this would be an opportunity for transit to be a carrot (get to the game or park faster) rather than a stick.
The entertainment district also could benefit as the Dreamers' planned hotels and restaurants are now next door to SeaWorld. Even if someone drives to the site, they don't have to get on the road again to go out for dinner after a day at SeaWorld.
SeaWorld also has to be willing to play ball for this to work, but this should be solvable for them.
*Orlando Dreamers is the name of the organization trying to bring Major League Baseball to Orlando, it would not be the name of the team.
A "quality control" checklist for a game designer
I want to put together a list of questions to ask myself when I design a board game that could eliminate issues before I bring them a game to the table for playtesting.
Some examples would be things like:
- Is there a first mover or last mover advantage?
- Is it possible for there to be a runaway leader?
- Is there excessive downtime between turns?
What else should I add?
I made a video called "Matchwright's Vaults" which combines am asynchronous matching game with a push-your-luck search for vaults containing treasure. Voting closes at 8 PM Pacific Time on Thursday, April 30.
Feel free to ask me any questions about the experience.
