Thoughts on BilletSpin Fusion after a couple of weeks

I have been using the BilletSpin Energel Fusion for a while now for all my creative writing and want to share some of my thoughts.

The Great

  • The Fusion is a great looking pen! I am a huge fan of the overall aesthetics of it, especially the way the concave grip looks.
  • The concave grip with rings is incredibly comfortable, quite possibly the most comfortable machined pen I have ever used!
  • This pen is incredibly fidgety! It took some time to get accustomed to (more on this later) how you click and release with the clip, but it is so nice when you do.
  • I am usually not the biggest fan of stepped noses, but it really fits the overall design of the Fusion.
  • I love not having to trim Energel refills!

The Preferentially Bad

  • This pen is noticeably back heavy, even when compared to other machined pens. I would love to see a future iteration that uses an Ultem mechanism in addition to the titanium clip.
    • To the end of further shifting the balance point forward, I would love to see a version without fluting on the grip.
    • I would also love for Rich to consider making the grip a separate piece so it can be a heavier material fro the body. An alternative is to make the tip out of steel, brass, or zirc.
  • The clip is selective on where you press it to release deployment. If you press too high or too low, it tends to catch on your thumb. Pushing it where it screws in or right below has been the sweet spot for me.
  • I still wish there was a way to replace the top pusher with an end cap to make the shorter.

NPD: Inventery V0.2 in Zirc with Timascus accents

Big thanks to Brian at Inventery for working with my on this amazing zirc Bolt Action V.02! It rocks a beautiful Seigaiha pattern that has been anodized teal with purple undertones along with Timascus accents.

I really love how the the anodizing and Timascus plays with the light and when there is indirect lighting, this the patterns almost look like they are glowing!

Custom Cyberpunk 2077 Hoodie

Wanted to share my custom Cyberpunk 2077 hoodie as it gets closer to completion. The only thing left is to use silver and gold permanent fabric ink to draw circuit line patterns that connect to the silver/gold circuit styled frame patches on the sleeves and front pocket. My line of thought is to create a stencil or guide using masking tape.

Advice for those looking to buy the Q3D Electron in Zirc

For those of you not subscribed to Q3D's newsletter list or part of the Discord server for Machined Pens, Q has added an additional 25 Zirconium bodies for Electron and these will be available on 7/24 at 11:30 AM Central. Given some of the comments I have seen as well as the confusion even on Discord, I wanted to post a "guide" based on my experiences buying one.

Where to find it?

The Zirconium bodies will be available on Pens > Electron and not Special Edition Pens. As the preorder is currently open, you can actually go to the link directly. I strongly urge that you bookmark it so you can quickly access it directly tomorrow.

Available Finishing?

This is where things can become a bit complicated for those who have never ordered a Q3D pen before as there are multiple configurations available for Zirconium bodies:

  • Blackened - Heated black and then polished to perfection
  • Oil Slick - Give a rainbow-like, iridescent surface coating that shifts colors under lighting
  • Reverse Tux - Heated black first (blackened) and then milled to expose the raw Zirconium
    • The raw Zirconium can then be anodized, which is the "Tron" version from the photos

How to choose the Electron from the photo?

Unofficially dubbed "Tron" by the Q3D community, the specific configuration in the photos is a Zirc body in Reverse Tux finished with Teal anodizing paired with a Zirconium bolt pin anodized Teal, machined Zirconium clip, and a Zirconium Parker round tip without milling.

  1. Choose "Zirconium" for Base
  2. Choose "Reverse Tux" for Finishing
  3. Choose "Teal" for Anodizing
  4. Choose "Blackened Zirc Bolt Pin" for Bolt Pin
    1. Since there is not an option for Teal Zirc Bolt Pin, we will have to choose this for now and add notes to the order (Step 10) to have it anodized Teal instead.
      1. Conversely, you can just choose to keep "Blackened Zirc Bolt Pin" and ultimately save $20 in anodizing costs. This will also allow you to checkout faster for those who use Shop, as you can just click "Buy with Shop" and then immediately pay.
  5. Choose "Blackened Zirc Bolt" for Bolt
  6. Choose "Blackened Zirc Top Cap" for Top Cap
  7. Choose "Zirc Machined Clip" for Add a Machined Clip
  8. Choose "Polished Blackened" for Clip Finish
  9. Choose "Zirc - Parker" for Tip
    1. "Zirconium - Parker" is the standard round tip option. There are additional options for Cone and Stepped which are appropriately named.
  10. Choose "None" for Tip Milling
  11. Choose "Polished Blackened" for Zirc Finish
  12. Click "Add to cart"
  13. Scroll down and enter in the "Order special instructions" text field, "Please anodize the bolt pin Teal to match the milling"
  14. Choose your payment method of choice

Where is the Electron milling for tips?

Some of you probably have seen the Electron pattern milling on tips and are interested in it and cannot find the option when following the ordering guide above. This is because this milling option is only available for full sized tips. For instructions on how to select it, follow these next instructions starting from Step 7 of the previous list.

  1. Choose "Zirc - Full Size" for Tip
  2. Choose "Electron" for Tip Milling at the bottom of the list
  3. Choose "Reverse Tux" for Zirc Finish
  4. Choose "Teal" for Tip Anodizing
  5. Resume Step 9 from previous guide

Tips and Tricks

  • Be quick!
    • While Q will be adding 25 more Zirc bodies, these will presumably be snatched up immediately. Typically zirc bodies are gone within a minute of the preorder opening although these might last a bit longer as a 2nd run.
  • Save your payment info!
    • I suggest using Shop as it makes checking out far quicker.

Handwriting has gotten neater but also smaller

So I have noticed something weird, my handwriting has progressively gotten both neater and smaller the more I write compared to when I first resumed writing again. Like I flipped to the front of my journal and the letters are huge compared to what I write now. When I Google this, the search results suggest something called "progressive micrographia" which they say is the result of too tight of a grip, loss of focus, being rushed, bad posture, or even the onset of Parkinson's. I really don't think that is the case though. My grip was certainly too tight in the beginning, but that was when I was still writing big. My posture has also improved, especially after I got a slanted writing board. I am not sure about lack of focus either because not only am I writing more, my writing has also become significantly more neat and consistent, just also smaller and smaller.

Has anyone else experienced that?

NPD: My fated fountain pen has arrived!

I finally received my fated fountain pen today! Introducing my Sailor PGS “Sunlight from the Ocean Floor”!

So, a bit of backstory…

Ever since I saw this pen, I fell instantly in love with it. The problem was that it was out of stock everywhere due to having been discontinued for a while, even for other nib sizes. So, out of desperation I posted the ISO thread and only one person responded that they can check the stationary store near them.

The next day while randomly browsing Pen Swap on Reddit, I saw a post from 3 hours prior that had the exact configuration I wanted down to the nib size and it was still available. YOLO’d immediately! 🥰
