Auto start stop on BMW - do you think it causes more parts to wear faster?
I just read this washington post article where it discusses the politics of auto start stop. Im not interested in that part of the article but saw that Kelly Blue book claims that newer auto technology can handle the wear from auto start/stop technology. I have a 2022 G30 where I cant turn the feature off, unless Im in full time sport mode, and just replaced my starter at 55k miles. Apparently this is pretty common with my G30 where replacing starters this early in a car's lifespan has never been my typical experience. Do you guys think the auto start/stop contributes to more wear/tear or do you think Kelly Blue book is right? Despite changing my starter, I dont mind the start/stop on my G30 as I do think BMW did it well, but I do wish I could turn it off without being in sport mode. I also had to pay ~$1200 to have my starter replaced which I wasn't very happy about. Not sure if this is a common part to go bad this early on BMWs though simply because of the part itself versus it being used for auto start/stop. It was ~$1200 to have my starter replaced....not sure I would trade 10% in gas efficiency for dealing with that again (if the starter failed because of auto start/stop).
